If you want to live a prepared lifestyle then fitness must be a part of that routine. It doesn't take much guys. And nobody is expecting you to be a 20 year old UFC fighter. You do the best you can for your age and physical limitations. As long as you're improving your own personal level of Fitness you're going in the right direction.

I'm in the 20-30 mile per week, during my training (halfs and did an 18 miler on Labor Day weekend). I get so rungry that I just don't lose weight. I'm scared of what's going to happen in 2018 when I start marathon training.
Then I got a stress reaction in my foot and couldn't run for 6 weeks, but kept eating like I was. Oops! Shot up to over 200 lbs (I've been around 190 for the past year, bounced off 180 a couple times last year). Time to get the diet back in check!

Starting out walking is a GREAT way. You don't go from sitting on the couch to running a 2 hour marathon. You have to take small incremental steps, and be consistent with it.
Stranded with no food, the fat guy can always last longer
That's what I'm going for!j/k. I've lost 20 pounds this year and want to hit 25 by Dec 31st.

OK. Home from having the other hip replaced. Got out of the hospital after 2 days instead of the 3 planned. No adverse reaction to anesteshia. PT an visiting nurse at home this past week. Walked 50 yards down the street yesterday, made it up and around the cul-de-sac today maybe 150 yards. Staples out Friday. PT in town starting Monday. Can do 12 straight leg leg lifts with surgical leg.

Well, I've been doing my routine steadily and getting stronger and faster. But I've had a pretty bad cold this week and I missed two days of exercising. And I would like to do it tonight but I'm still not feeling good enough. I'll have to double up over the weekend.

Some kind of WW I death flu from 1918 is going around; I swear. I got the flu 4 weeks ago, suffered through it and thought I was getting better. Then 3 weeks ago it got bad again. Went to the MD and they gave me a broad spectrum antibiotic and flonase. 10 days later a lot of the symptoms were gone but still had lung fluid and a sinus infection that was causing headaches. They then put me on a different antibiotic and sinus spray a week ago, and now that the antibiotic is done I think the flu might be coming back - headaches are gone but still coughing. Reminds me of those stories I read about how in WW I there was a flu that was so bad that if a cop saw you on a street in NY without a mask they threw you in an internment camp (makeshift camps set up at hospitals and military bases) until they could decide if you were safe and bring you back into the general population. 100 million died from that flu, which was over 5% of the population of the planet. Some areas like NY were supposedly closer to 10% of the population dying.

Coming up on 8 weeks since I had my right hip replaced, 6 months since my left one was replaced. PT is great, a real lower body strength workout. Straight Leg lifts and hamstring curls with weights, rubber band walking forward and sideways, stairs, stairs, stairs. I've been walking up and down my street since week 2, got it up to almost a mile by last week when it got cold and slippery. (Falling is a big no-no) Switched to the treadmill in the cellar, walk for a half hour at 2mph. Today I got onto my cross-country ski machine which has been my baby in my office for 25 years. Not real stable, I hung onto a large closet for most of it, but worked the legs pretty good for half an hour. I military press and bent over row the 25 and 35 lb. dumbells in the cellar when my son doesn't leave them on the floor. (I can't bend over and pick things up off the floor yet) I do seated military press (on my old desk in the cellar) because I can't lie down to do bench press and flies yet. I did get down on the floor in the living room a couple of times this past week to do some floor exercises, but it's not like PT because I can't put my ankle weights on by myself yet. Pool and gym privileges resume Christmas Eve. I'm anxious to see if I can still swim.

Well, I'm still at it.
I caught a brutal flu last month that took me out for two weeks. And I also tweaked my left shoulder changing a flat tire (getting old sucks)
I'm floating around 195lbs which is about where I was this past summer, but it's a tighter 195. I typically hover, around 205, and I'll get there, but it's much harder to build muscle with lower NATURAL test levels. It's really amazing how MUCH harder it is to build solid muscle with less testosterone. I've been starting to research some natural test boosters to see if that will help.
It's also still hard as I'm limited in what I can do with the herniated l1s5 disk I've been dealing with for the past 5 years, not to mention I think I have some rotator cuff damage in my left shoulder. I've been doing exercises to work around it since I started this thread, but I am going to my ortho tomorrow for it. I'll probably get another cortisone shot, along with Mr I to see how bad it is.
Feels good to be 43 years old and still at it. I've been an athlete/weight lifter my entire life, and i refuse to quit. It also feels good to run after my boys at the park playing monster for over 2 hours yesterday. Needless to say I didn't have to hit the treadmill yesterday after that. There were dad's younger than me just sitting on the sidelines while their kids played.
Keeping fit is important to me for several reasons.
1. I'm a warrior at heart and I need to be the best I can be.
2. Keeping young and healthy to keep up with my kids.
3. If the shift I need to be ready for anything.
I'd like to motivate other older guys to join me in staying/getting healthy and strong.

I have been hitting the gym a bit more regular the past month or so. 47 and better than most I know my age. My motivation is getting better, so will my actions at the gym.
We just joined a different club, our membership starts this Monday.

Dude I know what you mean. I was doing well a few months ago. Im a thin 150 lbs about 5'6" and was running a mile every morning alternating between top speed and jogging. Benching 210 lbs which was my heaviest ever. Then one day my elbow on one side and shoulder on the other just started hurting. So since then its been 2 months since I've gone back. Really sucks getting old. But I will get back into it this month.

Help prevent injuries by using less weight and more reps. Have blown out shoulder joints by pressing to much. Now I press 80 to 100 lbs lots of times.
When I was in my 40's the goal was to carry my muscle mass into my 50's. I did and into my 60's as well.
I am retired now and regularly workout 9 plus hours a week. Three hours or more on the elliptical, 600 stomach reps, 75 push ups with claps. Full hanging pull-ups and heck of a lot more.
I might not be able to kick a lot of ass, but if I had to walk 50 miles home there would be a lot of people that could not begin to keep up.

That's awesome Moth Man. My grandfather, who died at 93 years old, exercised every day. He did his push-ups, squat thrusts, and lots of walking up until the day he died. I plan to do the same.

Can't believe I missed this thread. I used to be a gym rat in my younger days. Those days are loooong gone though. Had a car accident 12 years ago and that was the beginning of the end for running, lifting, skiing, golf, tennis, anything that generated compression or torque on my spine. The only activity I can do comfortably is swim.
That being said, I was a competitive swimmer in HS (waaay back in the 70's). So swimming is a natural activity for me. 1977 was my last competitive swim. Now I swim for health. I swim everyday. I do 2-1/4 miles every day. My resting heart rate (I'm 57 y/o btw) is 47 bpm. I go to the doctor very often (for a number of maladies I don't need to discuss). They say I'm in great shape. The last thing I want to do though is look good in the casket. So I'm gonna keep swimming.

The retired trainer from the local high school is a fairly regular dinner companion (with our wives). I've been trying to get him to start a class on working out as we get older. One rule he says is paramount is LESS range of motion. Basically short stroke everything. Other gems are if you're 45 or so only lift heavy weights one day a week and be very much in control. Limit your enthusiasim. Remember what Mr. Americas' routine was 1 hour lifting, half hour swimming.
My shoulder doctor told me 5 years ago that every guy 50 years old is walking around with at least one torn rotator muscle. So common he won't even fix them because they just get torn again. PT for rotator cuff a big yes, and do those exercises every day for the rest of your life. Get the big rubber bands. Yes excercise every day down on the floor, leg lifts, light lifting, stretching, pushups, situps.
I am 8 months since my left hip was replaced. I am 4 months since my right hip was replaced. Appointment to see surgeon to replace right knee in March. I have been swimming just about every day for the past month. This past week an hour and a half every day. An hour of just laps, then half an hour of laps with weighted fins and webbed gloves. Then 20 minutes in the sauna and shower. I feel great. I feel strong.
I stopped going to the gym because just using the elipticals or the tread climber my R knee would be swollen for two days. I like to lift weights, but I do a light couple of sets every morning before breakfast. Top Dumbell I have is 35 lbs. It seems it doesn't matter if the dumbell is 15 or 35 lbs. I still want to do 25 reps/set
I also do some reps on my total gym(sorry I don't know how to not use the brand name to describe it)
If you are hurt, you have to get yourself healed or fixed. Take it from one who suffered too long. It takes longer to heal as you get older. Good Health and Long Life to all!
P.S. Find a strong massge therapist to go to every other week! One who uses her elbows to get at those big shoulder, butt and back muscles

It's gotta be 20 years ago in Korea. My buddy was into weight training. I was more of a running, core guy. We go to the gym and run thru his routine, me using way less weight. Next day I was fine. Day 2 and the following 3 days I could barely move. Felt like broken glass in my muscles.
