Do me a solid and kick a couple of those a bit farther south for me. I'm going to be over on Wadsworth property this year with my kid and really hoping to see something for his first year hunting.Beautiful evening with a big moon rising, I had a little success.

I got access to land on Papermill and Agar. We got a late start, so I found a spot and threw up a blind and we're just crossing our fingers. We did have a buck and doe come check us out while we were setting up a couple weeks ago, so I hope that's a good sign for us. I'm hopeful that next year I'll have more time to spend in those woods to find possibly a better spot.Best of lock to you both!!! Recently, I saw THE biggest rack I've ever seen in all my hunting days on Wadsworths' land at the Geneseo end of Nations road. I could get permission to hunt there but these days I'm content to hunt my own land at my own pace.

Now that’s a big deer!! That’s a beast.
I used to hunt deer with my Marlin 30-30 lever gun, it was a lot of fun. I live in a very hilly area full of brush, so shots over 50 yards are very rare. These days I just use my Mossberg 500 12 gauge with rifled slugs through a smooth barrel. Thats where I started 40 years ago, and still my favorite way.I couldn't make opening day, but I got out Sunday and Monday. I was worried Sunday walking in because I kicked up a small herd before first light. I saw at least 4 deer run away as I made my way to my stand. I didn't want a repeat of the only deer I saw being before legal hours. Then I saw this one around 90-100 yds away.

This year I was hunting with my Marlin 1894 in .45 Colt with a 300gr Hornady XTP hollow point and a charge that sent it downrange around 1450 fps. With my .270 I probably would've taken a shot, but with irons I couldn't tell if any given shot was clear and unobstructed, so I passed on this one. About an hour later, a 4-pter walks right in front of my stand. He gets to around 15 yards away in an open clearing and pop. He had a quick run of around 45 yards before laying down right at my 12 o'clock. Nothing crazy, but since I won't have many days to hunt this year, I took the 4-pt buck in hand over the 8-pt buck in the bush.

Hunting with the lever-gun and irons was fun with how short, light, fast, and easy-handling it is, but I'm happy only getting it blooded once. I'm going back to a bolt-action with a scope for better range, precision, and target identification.
