I read an article about this earlier today, and they said he had no backdrop to catch spent bullets and booked him with a $100;000 bond. Assuming he is a decent guy who did something terribly stupid, its' pretty sad all around. One thing that struck me immediately was the amount of the bond, when illegals are out raping, robbing, and intentionally murdering people while getting out on little or in some cases no bond at all. No big deal, it just caused me to have a big WTF!

Absolutely not. Fuck him. The article says his shot went "blocks" away. This doesn't sound like a rural part of OK where he had acres and acres. "Decent" people don't kill others because they're stupid.

His negligent behavior killed another person. He deserves what he gets.

What does bail reform in NY have to do with a dumbass in OK?

He screwed up, and should absolutely pay for it.

But when people *intentionally* rape and murder and get far lesser punishments, it is an indictment of our entire justice system.

And criticism of the bond amount is absolutely justified. The purpose of a bond is *only* to ensure you show back up to court. The only reason to make it high is if you believe the accused is a flight risk.

I have learned, at least over thisa way.... Bond is very high compared to what I saw in NY.

Many of these judges do not mess around at all.

Honestly, bonds that are too high are a problem too.

The only relevant questions when setting bond are "how likely is he to behave while waiting trial" and "how likely is he to show up".

For a first offender, the "behave" question is likely to be simple. He's behaved for 30 years with one possible lapse, a few more months is probably safe.

The "will he show up" should be based largely on how much motive and opportunity he has to run.

Dude owns a house ? That's going to anchor him pretty well. But the charges are very serious, so that's an incentive to run.

Really, this stuff needs to be a lot less subjective. When the attitudes and opinions of the people running the system matter, then you don't have justice.

Poor decisions, intentional or not should have consequences. He just killed someones grandma on Christmas day. Thats sad!

If he was shooting against a proper backstop, and followed all other rules he wouldnt be in this situation.

He deserves real prison time, but probably not a lot. Maybe a year or two IMHO.

Wow. What a moron. I also read that the older women was sitting on her front porch holding a baby with her family members. The bullet entered the opposite side as to where she was holding the baby, thankfully. Sad the women died. I personally think he probably got a little too ambitious and tried to do quick follow up shots and the muzzle rose up, but that’s just an assumption of course.

The reputation of Judges being harsh has been around a very long time...they are the epitome of FAFO.
In discussions about the brutality found in Southwestern Asia Countries: "Yes, they are brutal, but it's the only way of keeping them in line."

It is hard to tell from the overhead photo if there is anything that could be considered a backup for firearms, sure doesn't appear to be.
Not too many tears ago a local gun club I was a member of was having a hand gun competition, typically a big draw and typically mostly law enforcement guys. A .45 slug ended up on the deck of a house about a half mile away. The club shut the ranges down, brought in NRA range safety people and resized the berms to be compliant with some kind of specifications, seemed like they were shut down for a couple months. It is a huge club. well financed, and they took immediate action. Thankfully no one was hurt and some poor guy doesn't have to spend the rest of his life looking at his shoes.
Bad things happen to good people every day, a slip in judgment isn't always a criminal act.
