Exactly. The thermostat could sit in your basement not actually connected to anything all winter. What a good citizen, keeping their house at 63 all winter. In the summer, throw it in the attic.
Id be more concerned giving an outside entity access inside my network.

In the winter the thermostat is 64 degrees and in the summer it's 68 degrees.

It's going to get worse before it gets worse, it's how New York rolls.

the big board is a off brand of a Arduino Uno i got in a learning kit .. for 30 bucks don't expect to much but it is fun
learning something new programming is C++ so im learning as i go .. what your seeing is it hooked to a cheap 2
dollar DHT11 Temp/humidity sensor .. and showing on a display .. this is a start .. then you can build on it with code
if TEMP ==(80) then shut down furnace .. turn a pin on or off to trip the shut down relay ..

the smaller board you see is a Arduino ESP32-S3 16megs of storage , 210MHZ dual core i believe .. wi-fi , bluetooth and webserver
that was 13.75 i think .. i bought 3 of them . this little thing is a power house .. want to make your own smart home .. this is the
little dude that can basically .. i cam move what on the big board to the little one and just have to change what pins are used
in the code .. you can hit the webserver and bring up what is showing on the display on your phone . .. pretty neat ..
