The deer are ridiculous.
20 years ago you could see herds of 20 or so deer, now, herds of 50+. Its actually kind of amazing to see a near endless sea of deer.
We have 3 does with babies that visit our yard. Two of them have 2 fawns, the other has 3.
For years ive had a deer down before sun up on opening day, and could have more....but im too lazy to process multiple deer.
I'd have to imagine that with CWD deer will eventually be declared endangered and thus bye bye deer hunting.

This. There are deer everywhere by me. Drove the thruway or main road and there are dead deer everywhere by me. No public land to hunt by me is the reason. I know very few people my age that hunt anymore.
Look into joining in on a hunting lease in your county , or better yet, befriend a farmer and offer to help out. A lot of the older small farmers are short on farm hands .

Interesting. Where I'm at (a very rural area) has had a notable decrease in the deer population from 20-30 years ago. Back then, a "run around the horn" (a 2-3 mile circuit) while spotlighting would expose 200+ deer. Today, maybe 50.
It's not sport hunting - it used to sound like WWIII on opening day, now you hear 1-2 dozen shots at most all morning.
It's not food - there's a major farming operation around here that provides plenty of that.
Old timers at the camp I hunt from say it's the nuisance permits that farming operation gets, but I don't think that's the case. I live here now, I don't hear a lot of gunfire at any point throughout the year.
Im not sure what's going on around here in Chautauqua Co, but I do have a theory.
We are very rural also, and there are very few children. Many of our "neighbors" are empty nesters or over 65 years old.
20+ years ago it was like WW3 here too. Now I hear maybe 6 shots in the first half hour.
It used to be you could drive around during regular season and see dozens of trucks and cars parked, and see dozens of hunters in the fields. Now, I see almost none. The majority of the hunters in our immediate area are Amish.
Its kind of funny that sometimes ill hear 10-15 rapid shotgun blasts. The Amish almost exclusively use shotguns around here. They do deer drives and take out 5-6 deer in one flurry of death!
Unfortunately they are very commonly poaching. They usually play dumb when caught.
You may have heard my 3 year long issue trying to keep them off our land, ive posted about it several times. It included DEC officers, trail cameras, and nighttime surveillance. By the end of it, the DEC officers became more of an issue. I had to get a judges order to keep the DEC off our 440 acres!!
You know the Amish have been on your property when you find half a dozen carcasses on your land. They leave the head, bones, and hide. They just haul out the meat, like we do when Elk or goat hunting miles in the bush.

Tons of deer, very few hunters. The rural folk aren't breeding like they used to....except the Amish, they breed like rabbits.
I know a lady in her early 30s, she has 9 freaking kids, and is ALWAYS pregnant when I see her.
We have a lot of public land, but nobody is using it. I have thousands of acres right around me. There is Hill Higher State Forest, Broken straw WMU, Watts Flatts, Panama State Lands, Dole Swamp, Wellman WMU, Alder Bottom.....
Look at a hunting map of the area surrounding Panama NY, tons of public hunting. Western NY always has the highest deer harvesting in the state.

We have plenty of deer in the city. they live primarily on the railroad tracks and come into the parks and yards at night. I have them in my yard almost every night , I toss em a few apples or grapes , but they are all over the place.

This is one of the few things where NY is better than AZ.
Deer are sparse out here compared to NY, and the demand by hunters is high enough that they have to do a lottery for deer tags.
It's not terrible where I am, but you're not guaranteed a tag (or 3) like we were in NY.

So, I've lived in this Village of roughly 1500 people for over 33 years, and being somewhat a rural, farming community one would expect Deer in the fields around the Houses however not so much in their yards, but they very much ARE right here...there's always a couple does with fawns or yearlings, but last Spring in the field behind my house we counted 27 of them....I expect a few get harvested locally, if the fuckers won't stay out of my garden there might have to be a few more!
