If people want to put solar panels on their roofs for the heck of it, and at their own expenseright ahead.

If local towns or cities want to build covered parking with solar on top, or add it to city buildings, and it is in the budget for them to do so, and passes a vote - go right ahead.

Solar is an interesting technology that I believe will eventually become well adapted enough and efficient enough to do humanity a lot of good. I support it being put in place either for private use or reasonable public use, as a means of furthering the technology and potential cost savings.

That being said - screw solar “farms” in New York and especially the adirondacks. That land is to be left for the pristine enjoyment of ALL and for the conversation of land. I firmly am against whatever monstrosity they are trying to build.

Solar works n niche markets.
We are spending way too much money on them and it’s supporting China. China makes 85% of the world’s solar. We are arming our enemy and giving them economic power, bad move.
Now to solar. The money we are spending on it we could have spent a fraction of that putting scrubbers on coal plant chimneys and been farther ahead of where we are now.
I recently read a report where if we install 20 megawatts of solar it would save consumers in NYS $1 billion a year.
Well it’s about $1/watt install so that’s $20 billion to install 20 megawatts. Since solar panels last about 20 years that’s a break ever. Most of the solar is subsidized by tax payers with borrowed money. Then there are permitting fees and inspections, add this in and we lose. Then we have to remove the old ones, recycle them, and install new ones what’s the added cost for this?
Maybe they will get there someday, but we’re not there and we’re installing millions of acres, let’s wait u til we are there before we install them.

Last November my mother and sister were convinced to put solar on their roof. At considerable expense (I believe to the tune of ~$20k), with the promise of drastic savings on energy costs (their entire household is electric).
The day came, the panels went up, then nothing. Not a single penny in savings.
So my sister called the company. They send someone out who states "you don't have a battery backup so it won't work right".
They get the battery backup installed, at further expense. Still nothing.
Company comes out again, finds out the tie in on the side of the house was never wired into the power grid because it "was in the wrong place". Needed special permits they didn't have at the time. Took weeks to get that corrected.
Still waiting to see any savings on the power bill.
My mom is pushing my sister to call the company and tell them to rip it all out, fix any damage they caused to the roof, and pay back every cent or get sued.
We'll see where it goes.

I'm wondering... is there any proof these solar panels cropping up faster than dandelions are connected and actually adding power to the grid? Is there a way to track WHERE this power is going? (rumor is that the panels here in Genesee County are only to feed NYC).

Those are some great questions.

I live in Genesee County, and solar farms going up here and there have been a thing for a while now. But recently, it has really taken off for whatever reason. It's really out of control at this point, and it's going to fuck everything up in an area such as this.

There are now two solar farms a few miles from my house. But my electric bill is higher than it's ever been, even though at this point in my life, I'm not using anywhere near the electricity that I used to. Actually, my electric bill was a lot less when solar farms weren't a thing.

Besides all that, we get a lot ton of snow here in western Genesee County. When it isn't snowing, it's sleeting, when it's not sleeting, it's raining. This kind of area makes no sense when it comes to solar farms.

There are usually 5 to 6 days a week here that consist of gray, overcast, gloomy, mostly cloudy skies, and I'm not even being sarcastic or exaggerating. There's only a day or two a week of partial sunshine here on average, and sometimes that doesn't even happen.

This story and similar are reported over and over again. Solar is likely the most oversold thing out there currently. Good luck to them honestly but all this seems odd to me that no one would bring up any of that before this point. Lots of scam companies out there.

An increase in government incentives and a huge push from the lefty commiecrats are why it’s been increasing so fast. I heard Genesee county will be the solar capital of the USA and possibly the world. I heard now they are putting in windmills there and they will be the tallest ones in the USA at 650’.

Wouldn't be surprised if the APA (Adirondack Park Agency) was involved in putting the kibosh on this.

They have a great deal of power and can kick someone's ass just for draining registered wetland on their own property.

Sometimes that's needed, since the ADK has a significant moron and shitweasel population.

Not very popular with local loggers.

Last summer, we kept having power outages on Fridays in my area. I'd heard rumors that it might relate to the solar farms that were going up. Well, just yesterday a National Grid guy confirmed it. They were trying to bring the newest farm online and every time they flipped the switch to connect it to the grid, it would fry wires and cut out power for the entire area.

They've apparently never been able to fix the problem. They're reportedly throttling things down, only allowing 25% of the electricity generated to get through to the grid.

Sounds like someone forgot the DC to AC inverter before they flipped the switch.

Exclusive | Feds — and a country music star — slam Hochul’s push to blanket upstate NY farmland with solar energy panels: ‘On-brand elitism’

In upstate New York a dizzying 24,000 acres of solar panels — roughly the footprint of Paris, France — are required to equal the output of one typical natural gas facility.

I just saw some moron say that solar isn’t the problem but it’s the amount of farmland being turned into golf courses. They claimed more farmland is being turned into golf courses than solar. Many supported his claims. I have not seen a new golf course installed in my area in my lifetime so not sure where they are located, but certainly not nys.

The girl mentioned earlier in the thread claims this happens regularly. Many are never hooked into the grid or produce a fraction of what they are supposed to. Interesting to hear of this confirmation from outside of her.

….and gets the power THEY harvest because they decided it works for them set up in a manner they don’t hurt their other efforts.

Interesting facts to ask at the town meeting:

-private company stands up the farm; State subsidies
-power provided doesn’t go local; down to NYC it goes
-zero interface with local first responders; Google solar farm fires
-zero funding for local first responders training or resourcing
-electric company was given the green light to add additional tax/charges to EVERY electric customers bill (it’s already in your bill btw)

Fraud and corruption (without representation) has a new face.

If you're not intimately familiar with how your system is designed and works, you're probably getting fleeced.

As for *where* the power goes, it's one big grid.

There is no directing power from one house to a particular place.

There is only the inescapable fact that every watt generated at every instant is exactly balanced by a watt of demand *somewhere* on that grid.

But once it hits your meter, they are indistinguishable.
