In 2023, Demetrio Daga made a series of perfectly legal online purchases: Glock springs, a New York-compliant 10-round magazine, and a 3D printer. Those purchases did not constitute a crime. They did, however, reportedly place him on a government-generated target list that eventually led investigators to his home.

As AmmoLand News uncovered in 2024, every two months, eBay, Amazon, PayPal, and other companies send lists of people who buy 3D printers and gun parts to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This information was forwarded to Homeland Security Investigations New York’s El Dorado Task Force (EDTF), which includes various DHS units, including the Homeland Security Investigations Financial Crimes Task Force. The information is then passed to the New York Police Department (NYPD), which distributes it statewide to police departments throughout New York.

Despite the largely circumstantial circumstances, officers from several agencies pulled Daga over for a traffic violation and searched his car. Inside the vehicle, police recovered a 3D-printed handgun. The New York State Police Special Investigations Unit – Gun Trafficking Interdiction Unit (GTIU) then executed search warrants on his residence and his father-in-law’s home. At Daga’s residence, police recovered a collection of 3D printers, gun parts, body armor, and firearms that included 13 ghost handguns, 22 ghost AR-style rifles, 18 serialized rifles, and numerous magazines. Although they found firearms, there was no solid proof of trafficking.

New York Tracked Gun Owner After Online Purchases

Legal purchases of gun parts and a 3D printer reportedly put Demetrio Daga on a government list, leading to 15 months of New York police surveillance.

I read that article yesterday and called bullshit...I think while plausible it's a disinformation story to inspire fear...there's ALWAYS more to the Story and I expect there was someone informing on the accused.

You don't even need to MAKE a firearm to potentially have an unserialized one.
Own a shotgun from 1950 or earlier? Chances are there's no serial number.

Jokes on them, i'm already on all the lists.

Hell, my browser history from the 90s alone probably did it.

There is something to be said for accessing the internet through neighbors' weakly protected home networks.

I still assume I'm on a handful of lists for a number of bullshit reasons, but I also know I have files that contain a number of redactions which reduce the likelihood of unannounced arbitrary visits.

Freedom of thought and speech is protected. I can think, speak, read as I want. As long as I don’t take action against someone else.

My guns sitting in a vault should be the same. When I DO something dragging them against their will, THAT should be the time to punish me…..especially when the Feds and State can’t agree, make up their minds, nor write to an 8th grade comprehension level IAW their own DOL and CFR requirements for us low people

But you can bet any case the police decide to seize them they'll be on a table for a photo op and counted in the "ghost gun" statistics.

OH you mean them using something legal to statistical benefit. Well of course. NYS 101 for the Attack of the Gun.

If you're handy enough to work on a gun, you can just build your own 3D printer.

VORON Design

Get started with VORON 3D printer, the best little CoreXY 'space shuttle' you can build in your garden shed, or your kitchen.

Yes these do exist prior to '68 but anything from any sort of well known brand has serial numbers at least to the early 1900's and some earlier. There are some year and model exceptions but I would say its more common to have one than not from the bigger manufacturers.

This ebay reporting to NYPD has been known for a couple years now. I believe there is a NYPD powerpoint that was accidentally released describing how they find unwilling candidates.

There's certainly much more to this story than that explanation in the OP...

Online, in store or purchases of legal to own parts is not and does not constitute a "constructive" violation or worse criminal act. Let alone provide enough to pass the litmus test for "Probable Cause"
...

The shear number of unserialized firearms tells a different talent than just building for personal use, sorry... And there's not many smart "criminals" out there, carrying a self made firearm while just out & about is so fucking stupid, I can't dismiss it... Especially in NY where you know they have a hard-on for these things!

Unless you're prepared to take your case all the way up the food chain to the SCOTUS, you need to be smart! Exercise your Rights, absolutely! By providing yourself as cannon fodder is stupid. Again, I'm going to say there's more here than meets the eye. Made one and sold it or even gave it away to some other shithead that got jammed up for something and they rolled over on this guy. Jilted lover ... Or just a big mouth!

NY, NY ... Smh... Fuck NY!
But be smart while doing it!

I think unserialized guns are more common than you might believe. I have at least a half dozen older shotguns and rifles that have no serial number. From manufacturers like Fox, Springfield, and Mossberg. Were those companies not big enough ?

True story. I’ve lost four distributors between the two Safe acts even for normal firearms and ammo.

Ordering or otherwise acquiring "parts" for an otherwise legal firearm does not constitute illegal possession, and for "intent" that's subjective: Yes I bought Parts, and my FFL is receiving a 80% or complete Frame, so no crime has been committed, and I recommend fucking off.
80% DIY "Kits" have been available with enormous sales for well over a decade, yes I know NYS demands to know what handguns you have and them be registered to your Licenses, but those that plan to use illegal guns illegally will find no issue in the illegality of them...The Horses are already out of the Barn and the Legislature wants to burn it down.
