Odd...

I went to their "old" small garage/store and have seen them at gun shows. I've bought from them before. They seemed to do a good business. Seem like good people, I was happy with the price and service.

I wonder if they tried to expand too big too quickly and had trouble managing their costs. I haven't been yet but heard they have a nice new shop and range.

My guess is they sunk too much money in too quickly.

Running a business isn't easy, there are a lot of considerations people don't think about.

I certainly hope they can turn it around.

My thoughts exactly. I’ve never been here, but I have heard good things about them.

I went shortly after the new shop opened. Bought my new carry gun.
Went last weekend to get some gunsmith work done on my 9mm 1911 (still trying to figure out the fail-to-eject issue). Bought some ammo (against my better judgement, but haven't had time to get to PA and need it for the rest of the competition season) and ended up delayed for 20 minutes.

The new shop is fairly good sized, and well stocked with firearms. Not so much with ammo, but I find most places in NY are skimpy with the ammo stock lately (f-you Jumbo James! and your little crotch-faced McD arched eyebrows zombie jackass, too).
They were PACKED last weekend, but the staff did their best to help everyone in a timely manner.

I've also toured their range. Nice setup there!

Just a quick update.
Disappointed. I kind of expected it.
They came back and said it was "terribly dirty" (actual entry on receipt) and did a "deep clean" and tested it with 10 rounds.
I could have told them that it will occasionally work fine with 10 rounds. And how "terribly dirty" can a gun get with around 500 rounds through it and quick cleaning in between?

Back to the drawing board. Maybe I'll try some hotter rounds and see if it is maybe the main spring being a little to stiff for the cheap 115gr stuff I typically shoot.
Otherwise, it's going to be a safe queen for a while. I want to be able to shoot, not chase issues and lose competitions. I'll look for an alternative 9mm to play with... maybe one of the dreaded, scary, GLOCK pistols (not really fond of them, though) or a different brand of 9mm 1911.

Not to hijack the thread, but what are the specifics of the pistol? Have you done any mods yourself?

No mods. At least not before I started trying different recoil spring weights.
Which didn't help, BTW.

Metro Arms Corp, Manila, Phillipines - Imported by TriStar, North Kansas City, MO.

TriStar
American Classic II
9mm 1911
5" barrel
10+1 rounds

supposedly comes with:
19# mainspring
11# recoil spring

When this thing functions properly it is a dream to shoot. Accurate, little recoil, spent brass thrown off to the right. But I keep getting intermittent stovepipes where the spent brass ends up stuck in the breech.

Well I would look at the extractor tension. There shouldn't be any problems running that ammo with that spring combo. There's definitely good info on tuning the extractor out there including from Wilson Combat among others. I think that's usually the culprit with the imports, even with some of the big names. Especially if your ammo has varying case lengths which most do. A shorter case ends up being held by just the extractor instead of head spacing properly. Which might explain why it runs well and then starts stovepiping.

any chance you could start a new thread for this? I’d love to see a picture of the exact malfunction and what it looks like. Based upon all the 1911’s I’ve worked on I’d say either something with the extractor, recoil spring is too light and wrong kind of spring, or maybe the magazine.

Everything I've read so far said it is likely a recoil spring too heavy, preventing the slide from moving back far enough for the spent case to interact with the ejector.

Either way, I'll try to get to the range and see if I can get some go pro vid of the malfunction, and write up what I've seen and tried so far, for a new thread. this is curious and frustrating and, yes, I'll admit I'm not a gunsmith. That's why I took it to a gunsmith.
They seem to have focused on something easy, didn't really listen to me when I explained the issue, and failed to perform what I would consider as thorough troubleshooting.
I don't really want to spend more than the cost of a new 9mm 1911 trying to get this one running properly. At that point it becomes financially more responsible to cut my losses and buy another gun.

I have a “5 in 9mm that is running a 14lb recoil spring that shoots 115grain range ammo just fine. It also could be extractor tension being too tight which can cause a malfunction, but then I would expect to see an occasional failure to fully go into battery for when a live round is stripped from the magazine.

With too light of a recoil spring (the technically correct term is actually the return to battery spring per JMB’s patent for the 1911) the slide isn’t being held open long enough for the fired brass to fully clear before the slide tries to close back into battery. A picture of the failure and it looks like when it happens would be helpful.
