A handcuffed suspect in a fatal shooting at a Michigan Spirit Halloween store was brutally beaten by the victim’s family,

Issuing out a little street justice before the courts can let him off with a stern warning.

Saltwater60 · Saturday at 12:51 PM

They should have let them do their thing and I can almost assure you two gang members less in the USA would be the result.

spat · Saturday at 1:05 PM

If you don't want this happening more and more, you better figure out how to get the public to trust that the system will deliver real justice again.

holdover · Saturday at 1:51 PM

That's unfortunate .

Brawny71 · Saturday at 2:17 PM

Perhaps it is the only way the family feels confident any Justice can be accomplished. Actually surprised more of this hasn’t taken place with Cashless Bail and Early Release.

Interesting the conclusions some of you jump to, likely without reading the article.

"The suspect’s wife, Alanna Benson, told reporters that she, her husband, and their three young children were leaving the store after shopping for costumes for their son’s fourth birthday party when a man with whom her husband had prior history confronted them.
Benson said the other man reached into his hoodie pocket, prompting her husband, who she described as a concealed pistol license holder, to draw his gun and fire."

Sort of potentially changes the tune, eh ?

"Reached into his pocket" is a bit of a flimsy thing to shoot someone over.

I could see drawing, but until you know what he's pulling out, actually firing on him is a bit premature.

Does your source say what he was pulling out ? That could make all the difference.

If he was actually drawing a deadly weapon that changes a lot of things.

Word on the street is that the guy was reaching into his sweatshirt pocket to grab a couple mini Snickers, a fun size Milky Way, and an old box of raisins to offer up as a treat. He ended up getting tricked.

Well, no weapon has been reported. You think that would be newsworthy if he'd had one.

But journalism being what it is these days, that's not reliable.

And these days it's at least as likely he was pulling out a phone to record.

No cant shoot a man for reaching in his pocket, even if you can legally carry. Article does not say whether the deceased even had a gun, legal carry doesn’t neccessarily mean good shoot.

Pale Rider · Sunday at 8:40 AM

If he said I'm gonna shoot you and then reached into his pocket as if pulling a gun, I wouldn't wait to see the gun. By then it would likely be too late.

Yes, if there was a clear and present threat like that, you do not have to wait.

I would certainly have drawn on that. Probably would have waited to see what came out of the pocket to fire.

Gun drawn with sights already on target means nearly instant reaction compared to bringing something out of a hoodie pocket.

LOL. I lived in Madison Heights Mi from '59 to '64. ( 31198 Edgeworth Dr ---Look it up, LOL ) I was 5 years old in '59

you know, when Pterodactyls still flew. My dad worked for Ford, and his boss was Lee Iacocca. He worked in the design Dept and KNEW they were going to produce the Mustang. So my dad ordered a 1964 Mustang Convertible, 289 w/3spd. It was maroon with a black top. We had that car until **someone** drove it into a bridge during a snowstorm in '74. My dad literally didn't talk to me for a month

anyway, it appears the neighborhood has gone down hill in the last 60+ years or so

Don't forget to consider this: You, your wife and three young children are standing where a bunch of bullets are about to start flying if you don't prevent it.

There is adequate time to see if it's a phone or a gun or a knife coming out of that pocket before firing.

And my wife is smart enough to get behind me or some better cover on her own.

Or you could spend the next 10 years in prison for shooting a guy drawing a cell phone.

It's all about managing the risks.

Pale Rider · Sunday at 2:32 PM

I would rather take my chances in court than put my family and myself in that kind of peril. I think I would have a good chance of beating the rap. Anyway, it would be better than losing a kid.

Your odds of beating him to the shot, *if* you have to take it are *a lot* better than your odds of beating the conviction for shooting an unarmed guy.

Then what will your family do when you're in prison and the guys family wins the lawsuit and takes all your assets ?

You think you're a cop with immunity and a union to pay your legal bills?

tgenec86 · Sunday at 10:03 PM

What a shit job of writing that news article. Disjointed, non-specific, and open to interpretation. Which family did the beating? Did they both have guns? The "suspect" was there WITH HIS FAMILY when a man he knew accosted him, so he shot the guy - who evidently was there with HIS family? Looks like two families are going to be blood feuding and this is just one chapter of many - paid for by the generous taxpayers.
