This chaps my damn biscuits. FCC repeals 'Net Neutrality'

Has Darth ever had to pay more to post in his Rainbow 6 thread? Nope, you're just saying what might happen. I'm talking about actual things that NN actually does. You're talking hypotheticals. NN says that all packets have to be treated the same, and that's BS. I'm saying that the hospital...

I'd be happy to bring in constitutional rights and bring free speech into this, but I don't think you want to go there.

This chaps my damn biscuits. FCC repeals 'Net Neutrality'

I'm saying that ISPs have a finite amount of throughput. They can only transmit X amount of data per second. Computer networks use a FIFO (first in first out) method for routing packets. Priority routing moves certain packets to the front of the line. This doesn't necessarily increase bandwidth...

Speed isn't the same thing as priority. My comment is accurate.

This chaps my damn biscuits. FCC repeals 'Net Neutrality'

Found it So, you're willing to put people's lives at risk to make sure people can post shitty lolcat memes on Facebook at the same priority as a doctor performing surgery?

This chaps my damn biscuits. FCC repeals 'Net Neutrality'

Do you believe they should give people in first class extra attention and give them priority with drinks, blankets, headphones, etc? I'm not sure if you ever answered my question about this. What's wrong with an ISP prioritizing traffic from a hospital that is doing remote surgery? They...

And the market or targeted government took care of those issues. All of them were before NN.

And I believe that unicorn farts smell like fresh brownies. Neither of these things have ever happened and we don't know that they would be true.

What ISP is this from again? Once again, ISPs have never done this before, even when they could have.

I'm an idiot. I saw cb and thought ham for some reason.

This chaps my damn biscuits. FCC repeals 'Net Neutrality'

NN would specifically prohibit paying for priority though. The doctor's surgery data would flow at the same rate and be bottlenecked just like Netflix traffic.

You didn't respond to my questions about a stock trading company or a hospital paying for priority traffic.

And the vast majority of people have access to HughesNet or another provider, just like people can go to Target.

Jesus fucking Christ. Neither is Spectrum. People have options, they just don't use them.

@Willjr75 Should Walmart be able to block certain internet traffic as they see fit? Or, should they have to allow everything through, irregardless of what it is?

Let's put the shoe on the other foot. Let's say that I run a business that caters to stock traders. I live in East Bumfuck, Kentucky. Now, for my business, I need very quick internet to the stock exchange. I don't need quick internet for anything else. People want to browse NYGunForum.com from...

This chaps my damn biscuits. FCC repeals 'Net Neutrality'

No ISP has a monopoly. And I get where you're coming from. People should be free to do what they want on the internet. Verizon shouldn't block iloveguns.com. I just don't think that using government as a tool to accomplish that is a valid response.
  21. NirvanaFan

This chaps my damn biscuits. FCC repeals 'Net Neutrality'

And you don't think that we're providing access to what some people would consider fake news to fit an agenda?
  22. NirvanaFan

This chaps my damn biscuits. FCC repeals 'Net Neutrality'

I have the ability to censor that, just like an ISP, but I won't ;)
  23. NirvanaFan

This chaps my damn biscuits. FCC repeals 'Net Neutrality'

Probably not. But that doesn't mean Spectrum shouldn't be able to control their private business assets.
  24. NirvanaFan

This chaps my damn biscuits. FCC repeals 'Net Neutrality'

Because it shouldn't be illegal for the government to tell private companies what speech they have to allow and what they don't. Do you really want the government coming in here and meddling with our website? Should we have to entertain anti-gunners thoughts?

OpenVPN runs on TCP/UDP and can be configured for port 443. To the ISP, it looks like you're just browsing a HTTPS site. Libraries usually get discounted rates and would probably be getting a full package.

This chaps my damn biscuits. FCC repeals 'Net Neutrality'

I would never argue that we need no regulation whatsoever. What we do need is focused legislation. And that is something that is severely lacking.

Except they already do. You can face fines for not getting licensed to transmit.

Set up a VPN proxy. Now they just see encrypted VPN traffic. Or go to the library to get your information. Or pay your neighbor $10 for WiFi access. Or move. Nobody is forcing you to enter into contract with an ISP.

His point is valid. I should be able to drink the milk straight out of the cow's teat if I want. We can't even buy raw cider from the state fruit! I understand the want for regulation to protect people, but there is a point where it starts to be ridiculous.

:banghead: FFS man, you have options! You really think Spectrum will be throttling or charging for packages if other ISPs in their major markets don't? They'll get hammered if they do. They're not going to be charging the Finger Lakes for packages when they can't do it for Rochester.

My ISP put out a little blurb today regarding NN. "We’ve been asked by many of our customers and people in our community about the recent changes by the FCC to Net Neutrality and what effect that will have on Greenlight Networks. With or without Net Neutrality, Greenlight has and will continue...

Regarding waste from a nuclear power plant.... I would think that discharging radioactive waste into a stream would be infringing on other's rights, no? They have no choice in the matter, which is the exact opposite of this issue we're discussing. People do have a choice. Choose a different...

This chaps my damn biscuits. FCC repeals 'Net Neutrality'

You enter into a contract with your ISP, you don't with the power plant company with their waste. You're comparing apples and oranges.

Of course they should have to take them. It's life or death. That's not the case with information. But, any health care provider that would deny life saving first aid will be run out of business faster than the ink would take to dry on the lawsuit. They take an oath, and every practitioner that...

This chaps my damn biscuits. FCC repeals 'Net Neutrality'

Has any ISP actually come out and said that they'll be doing this? Private companies are free to censor though. I can censor you on here, right? You may not like them doing it (and I'd be there with you) but they should be able to do it. The government shouldn't be stopping them.

Technology has moved forward in the past 15 years without NN ;) . DSL connections can go way faster than they used to. I think Frontier offers 6m residential now, which should be enough to watch HD video.
  40. NirvanaFan

This chaps my damn biscuits. FCC repeals 'Net Neutrality'

Sure they are. Streaming video only needs about 1.5m. DSL routinely gets 3m.
  41. NirvanaFan

This chaps my damn biscuits. FCC repeals 'Net Neutrality'

So, the government should be controlling pricing now? Are you really arguing this?

Go to the library to use the internet for free. If you're going to argue that it is vital, are you also going to argue that housing is vital and should be controlled. Guess what started the home crisis about a decade ago? Banks made bad loans because they were protected by the government. YAY...

I know people that use DSL and cell phone hotspots. To do the vast majority of things, DSL and phone speeds are perfectly fine.
  45. NirvanaFan

This chaps my damn biscuits. FCC repeals 'Net Neutrality'

I'd argue that home internet isn't a necessity like electric, so the two aren't comparable. You have plenty of options for internet. Cable (Spectrum, Cox, Comcast, whoever), satellite, phone (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, whoever), DSL, etc. There are options. Increasing government regulations isn't...

This chaps my damn biscuits. FCC repeals 'Net Neutrality'

Same here. I dropped TWC/spectrum internet less than a week after it being available. I've got faster speeds and saved $15/mo. No more randomly having to reset my router either.
  47. NirvanaFan

This chaps my damn biscuits. FCC repeals 'Net Neutrality'

It was more of a rant about government in general, not specific to NN. You don't see an issue with government picking winners and losers? That is exactly what they have done for decades now. Know why lobbyists have so much influence in politics? It's because government gives money and picks the...

This chaps my damn biscuits. FCC repeals 'Net Neutrality'

Comcast never throttled Netflix traffic. They just didn't open up peering ports, and they were under no obligation to do so. There is a difference. They didn't just go out and say, "Netflix traffic sucks up all our throughput, let's go ahead and throttle them down to 50%." They said, "Holy crap...
