Here we have an article saying that there will be 2 million jobs created in the construction industry over 10 year with Biden $1 trillion dollar plan. Of course their anwser is there’s only white people in construction now so we need to diversify. I know big surprise that’s the answer to everything.
So I got to thinking does the math even add up?
They say 90% of the 7.5-8 million construction workers at white. Ok probably, maybe?? If they aren’t counting illegals, but I sure see a lot of Hispanic and black construction workers but what do I know.
The breakdown is 7.2 million white workers and 800,000 minority worker.
Well there are about 237 million white people in the USA. That calculates out to 3% of white people being construction workers. That leaves about 83,000,000 minorities in the USA. That means roughly 1% of minorities in the USA are construction workers. In order to fill that they would have to get minority participation up 2.5 times what it is currently. I don’t see that happening. Also keep in mind that would be every 10 years since they project 2 million construction workers being needed every decade. Also we’re short 235,000 workers now. Good luck. Talk about a failure.

If you care about this sort of thing (more on that in a sec).... It's not as simple as X white people and Y non-white people. There other demographics like age and education levels. Inside the white people group as a percentage many are older than in the non-white group. You also have education levels. White people tend as a whole to be have better education levels than black or Hispanic people. Personally, I work in an analytics role in a nice comfortable office, and I have this opportunity because of education. No way I'm about to pour concrete for 1/3rd of my current pay. People who don't have a lot of opportunities... well pouring concrete might not be so bad, relatively speaking.

Side note about the above and article; the race thing is BS. Either a worker is qualified or not. Last time I checked the amount of melanin in your skin has nothing to do with that.

No and yes, in order.

Diversity isn't really good or bad. If I'm hiring say... engineers to design a bridge, their competency as an engineer is important. The genetic makeup of their parents/them.... not so much. You don't get any better results if one of your engineers is black and one is white than having two white engineers or two black engineers. Diversity is meaningless. You get better bridge designs by hiring better engineers, regardless of race.

Forcing diversity is bad. Agreed.

Why are there even race questions on a job application? It has no bearing on qualifications. Best person qualified should get the job. I'd say the majority of jobs don't even need a gender question. Women can do most of the jobs men can do. Some jobs would be harder for them but doable.

When I interviewed for the position I have now, it was a one hour phone call. It was almost 3 months before I met my boss and saw him in person.

I don't have a profile picture posted anywhere so he only knew what I looked like from descriptions by others.

The interview was strictly about the requirements for the job and my qualifications. The way it should be.

Well there are only so many UNSKILLED broom pusher jobs in construction!!!

Maybe the problem is the same HS dropouts that couldn't hack learning stuff certainly can't learn a trade that requires commitment and diligence to actual learn a trade. These bleeding hearts think it's a simple fair, just give em a job and they'll work. And for the matter most construction trades are already highly diversified!

Maybe the article should discuss diversifying the medical industry! Or how about engineering! Nuclear science!?

And there is no problem with that. I have zero issues with minorities getting hired but the fact is of these stats are true simply saying we will encourage minorities to do construction jobs is a lie, a big lie. I’m sure it’s all about political motivations.
