The worst part is they tried to sell "Ebonics" as derived from African languages spoken by slaves.

This is pure retrograde, racist bullshit. I learned Swahili when I lived in Kenya. Swahili originated on the Indian Ocean coast of East Africa and is mostly Bantu with a lot of Arabic which came from the Arab traders that plied the coast.

Got to the proficiency of a 12 year old. It is an exacting, detail oriented language. If you ask someone "Where is the tea?", the construction of the answer - "Over there", will tell you whether the tea is "inside" or "outside" the cupboard. The difference is one single letter which changes the intonation and inflection of the answer.

The thought of Maxine Waters trying to speak Swahili makes me crack up.

My oldest is mostly-fluent in Swahili. :) She's forgotten a lot of it, as there's not much practice for her up in NH.
