There was an incident of some sort I'm sure.

Base commanders have a lot of discretion on wielding their power. They can order their service members to avoid certain establishments or properties. Usually it's a specific reason something like "you are banned from going to bar _________ because it's a known cocaine dealing location and too many base members have gotten into fights and arrested there"

A private property could even be as simple as some of the soldiers were cutting through his property and damaging it and the guy complained to the base. So the commander is taking the complaint seriously and ordering his soldiers to not step foot on the property. Who knows. Maybe the guy is mental and made threats. I have no idea just throwing scenarios out.

Soldiers will fight for any stupid reason or none at all. Fighting over whores, professional or amateur, is common. Or if somebody bumps into another. Sometimes it's for shits and giggles alone. It's normal and borderline healthy even..............until if things get out of hand. Which they can with frightening rapidity.
I used to brawl all tge time but 9 out of 10 times I'd be hoisting brews alongside tge guy I was fighting with by the end of the night. Sometimes though guys take things too far. Way too far.

@Drinkthekoolaid haa probably hit the nail on the head with his summation. I'm sure it was something silly, stupid and mundane. Maybe a drunken solider was pissing on the lawn. Or asleep on the porch. Something like that.

Given it was a long time ago but when I served there was always a list of businesses solders could not go to. When I was at Hood every long weekend the company commander would give a safety briefing that included his order to "not go anywhere in between 2nd and 10th streets" because it was not the best neighborhoods. Me being the asshole I am had to ask every time "Hey sir, what if you live in that neighborhood?" to which he would just tell me to move somewhere else.

Fairly common and many places are off limits. They even depict this crap in Hollywood films. Usually the local cops or bar owner gets sick of the fights and this is the result.

Couple things here, and let me preface it with having Served, worked, and lived in the Community since 1986.
Garrison Command (and Division Command) hold Right and privilege to restrict, limit, and prohibit Military Personnel from places deemed unacceptable and being caught or even implicated can and will result in UCMJ actions.

"The Pit" is an abandoned sand/gravel Mine, where some enterprising people set up a Party spot of sorts; pay you're money, go in and do as you will, and that lead to numerous fights, under age alcohol (and Drug) consumption, Sexual escapades (underage/illicit) and other activities., then a couple weeks ago a kid got killed as a direct result of his attendance.

Fort Drum got wind, and prohibited personnel from the Property (there are other places Off Limits as well) and since Uncle Sam owns your ass 24/7 he can make it stick.

Locals are sick of it, and along with Law Enforcement are/have shut it down.
When we Served, we frequented a LOT of Bars and Clubs...very seldom were there actual "Fights" especially involving multiple persons, but yes these things DO happen, and the "Locals" are more apt to cause problems/fights than Servicemen (Having Staff Duty come get your ass out of Jail does not go well with your chain of command)
I'm all for having a place to go park, have a Beer, bon-fire, and maybe even get lucky, but uncontrolled becomes uncontrolled and that's what it became.

The "kid" that was killed was 24, and word has it that he wasn't the driver: the one of the two underaged occupants of the vehicle was driving and they switched places to cover it up.

Ok, the underage crash victims lived and the 24 yr old died. If the “of age” occupant was not driving then an underage person was, and, if the driver was intoxicated, it will make for an unholy shitstorm now that a fatality is involved.

very much so, vehicular homicide is a serious felony...
I expect the NYSP brought in the Accident Reconstruction Team...

This is third party, speculation, and hearsay:
People on the scene have said "there's no way he was driving" and I'm being coy because I do not know if the finding have been released or charges filed, and there's a Juvenile involved...the truth will come out, in the mean time people are coming down hard on "The Pit"
Apparently there were multiple videos taken at "The Pit" of young people fighting, drinking, all the shit that always ends in trouble, and folks are pissed off about it.

Off limits by base/post commanders happens a lot.

In the early 90's, the commanding General of Fort Bliss put the entire Country of Mexico on the Off limits list.

We did not pay attention to that memo....

The video that caught a lot of attention was of a youngster getting knocked out by a drum soldier, which is probably where all this got started
