I am in the process of doing a retro build. Trying to build an M16A2 clone as close as possible. Got a "Property of U.S Govt M16A2" stamped receiver with "Safe, Semi, Burst" selector print. Next is upper config...plenty of A2 style uppers to choose from (fixed carry handle). Gotta have the M16 style foregrip and front sight. I have been eyeing an H&R complete M16 style upper with a 20" FN barrel. I guess they are just PSA built with H&R stampings. I would still change some things about it to have better authenticity. Choices, choices, choices.

Do you have a pistol yet? Go with a PDW brace, dot, and light. Make a nice HD gun, can even add a suppressor later. Make it a pink gun with unicorn mags, make fun of the guy that got smoked by a pink gun.
Build something you can shoot regularly and enjoy, instead of another safe queen. There are good CMP matches in your area. They mostly shoot AR-15 service rifle. These are not difficult to build. 20" free-floated barrel, 4.5lb two stage trigger, 4.5x scope. Most of the parts are standard mil-spec. Course of fire is similar to good'al qualification course.
I think you should build what I would also like to build someday: A heavy bench pig of target rifle.

I’ve mentioned a few times. Kali-key takes the first part of the AW clause out; makes it bolt/ manual action. You can have everything else. Fun to watch people at the range want to ask or even call to find out…..NYS compliant.

Inspite of what some may say or think, go with the 10"
I agree with this. If it was .300blk, I would say 7.5". Just make sure you stay within length requirements and no forward grips.

Anything under a 10.3" requires careful thought and parts selection to get running right. It used to be that under that length reliability was always suspect but the market has responded with solutions. Nevertheless when going shorter than 10.3 you are on a non-standard, specialized path in terms of buffer weights, recoil springs and gas port specs. I would go with a 10.3 if you want a shorty boy but personally I think the 11.5" is the best all around length for an SBR AR-15. Then again if you want to go with 300 BLK the market has figured out how to make really short barrels run well with that cartridge. If you can stomach paying .308 money per round for 7.62x39 performance.
