Violent teen takeover shines light on need for parents to be accountable, community leader says
Tuesday, July 7, 2026 12:39AM- RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Community leaders are calling for more accountability and resources for teenagers following a weekend incident that police say involved thousands of teens gathering at two different locations in Raleigh.
Barnes said he has been trying to understand what led to what he described as "complete chaos" from Brier Creek to Glenwood South. Police have said teens were behind the incidents.
The incidents are part of what has been described as a growing trend of "teen takeovers" in cities across the country, including Tampa, Atlanta, Washington and Chicago, where gatherings are organized through social media and large groups of teens show up.
According to police, about 8,000 teens gathered in Raleigh during the weekend events.
Police said an innocent bystander was struck by gunfire during the Brier Creek incident. Barnes said he believes there is a lack of parental accountability.
"I think that we gotten away from disciplining Our kids, you know, it's a way you do it. And I feel that a lot of parents of younger children are afraid to do that," he said.

Folks it is hard to imagine this number (8000 ) teens causing chaos in one night. How does anyone in their right mind ... Of any race .. want to enter an area where this could erupt. The police say we need a curfew ... How does one control this number even if one is in place. I have family near Raleigh would you feel comfortable just flying into that area at night. ... It is a bit disturbing to me .

This not really hard to take care of. Pay your staff or pay informants to keep the dept abreast of "takeovers", its literally public inforamtion. The city of Raleigh like most bigger cities owns at least one LRAD. Roll in with your force in riot gear before the time of the event, break out the bearcats and MRAPS you got for free, lots of lights, lots of HD cameras. Block streets in 2 directions but giving 2 to disperse in the safest direction. Give a PA order to disperse, then blast them with the LRAD. If that fails to work start popping 40mm CS into the crowd.
The correct explanation is not that they can't manage illegal street takeovers, they lack the will to manage street takeovers.

Must be all the legal gun owners doing this. Oh wait teenagers can’t generally posses pistols outside the home.
It's not even the guns. Sure that's a part of it.
It's just the general completely lawless mob mentality behavior that they exhibit with zero fear of accountability or repercussions. Their actions are a threat to everyone near them minding their own business just going about life.
And then, throw guns and frickin spears into it.... And it's just a caldron of violence and unruly behavior that is a serious problem that needs to be completely crushed.
They are a couple of election cycles away from being the next VA.
