“The Talk” Before You Ask: NY Pistol Permit References and Cohabitant Forms

[PeteT]

Applying for a New York pistol license is a personal decision. Bringing a handgun into a home is a family conversation, too. One that can be a sensitive one in our political environment.

I wrote this guide for people whose spouse, parent, or other family member is uneasy about it. It covers listening without pressure, secure storage and access, training, and what NYC cohabitant and reference forms actually ask someone to sign.

What question would you want answered before a handgun came into a shared home?

“Honey, I’m going to be honest with you. This whole thing makes me uncomfortable. Yes, you might have the “right” to vote, and that amendment exists, but I’m just not comfortable. 11 of you almost let a toddler strangler off with murder.”

That conversation ought to go over well.

After the last 6 years, if you have a family member that doesn’t want a gun in the home…you need a new family.

Your post does not sit well with me. Who are you really, and what is your background? What is your day job, and your experience with firearms?

It strikes me more that you are using this post as a sneaky way to get your business promoted, while disguising it just as friendly advice. And your choice of a business name of NY Safe Inc. rubs me the wrong way, especially given what those of us who own, or have owned firearms in New Yorkistan have endured under the “NYSAFE Act” that was passed in the middle of the night under Cuomo. It feels like you’re trying to get included in internet searches made regarding the actual NYSAFE Act.

Very curious what others on NYG think about this.

I may be out in left field about this, then again, maybe not.

YMMV.

I encourage anyone sharing a home to take the class together. Often one has no intention of getting or using a gun….till after the class; 80% change their minds after Livefire. The intent of my encouragement isn’t selling them guns but if they are in the house, they to should know the safety rules and why things need to be known and communicated. I’ve had a few bring minors as well.

Education and exposure is important. Knowing the laws, justification, Castle Doctrine/ Stand Your Ground (Not a blank check to fire here in NYS), and duty to retreat is often a huge learning curve. Justification for use of force is always the big question to answer.

Yes, anyone sharing the home needs to be aware. I know as a child I knew what was in the parents nightstands and every other hide space. But I was educated about firearms and lived.

Please be careful spreading the “NY has no castle doctrine/SYG laws” misinformation.

Those of you posting prejudicial, negative posts on the subject I ask but one question: Did You Read and understand the article linked in the original Post?

There is no long history, of common family conversations, about ever bringing a handgun into the home, ever recorded.

Possibly in Family court, after a husbands guns have been confiscated, for the safety of paranoid "loose panties, Karen:........... she and boyfriend were scared.

I am afraid we have an anti gun "whatever" posting this drivel.

Understood. Castle Doctrine is defined differently in each state. Duty to Retreat has priority as far as you safely can. Justification is the big delimiter in using force; death or serious injury.

My fault not clarifying
