Sounds like with the executive order the USPS will be forced to replace its fleet of mail trucks.
A quick search revivals they have 228,000 and the only one to submit a bid that would fit the EV is lordstown EV truck at $53,000. Oh not to mention they haven’t built a single vehicle to date. Well the prototype of course. It’s a 600HP EV with a range of 250 mile and towing capacity of 6,000 LBS. now they say 7,500 lbs towing, notsure how much mail weighs but can’t imagine they are over 6,000lbs. It’s just a lot of money to spend.

2. Let's set aside the actual cost of the VEHICLES. Let's look at the cost to install charging stations at locations for all these vehicles. Don't even want to consider the repair and maintenance costs. I'm sure EV's are next to free to fix.
3. I'm getting pretty sick and fucking tired of hearing "executive order". I thought this was a democracy and we vote on decisions. What's the sense of having a senate and congress when everything is an executive order?

GM is phasing out internal combustion engines by 2035.

I think GM also is somehow connected to Lordstown. I forget where I read it.

The executive order section 205 deals with govt vehicles and has 2035 as the date to be carbon free. He wants the vehicle plan to be submitted in 90 days.

The only positive side of this is my mail carrier has been driving the same clapped out Gruman with no muffler on it for 10 years. My dogs go apeshit every single time they pull in the driveway. The electric probably wont even wake them up unless they do that obnoxious Amazon truck noise.

The usps order could be split between 3 contenders. Workhorse, lordstown and Ford. Remmeber ford is coming out with new etransit Vans. I took a small position in ford , and I have a large portion in workhorse I've held for months.

given their lifespan I guess your 3 x may be on point.

Workhorse has been making Vans and fulfilling 5000 orders . Lordstown owns some of their intellectual property for batteries. Ford has a trusted name though .. I'm thinking both workhorse and Ford will get part of it.

There is still plenty of “idle” time that is not reflected on the odometer. Yes even electric cars will have to run lights and heat and other systems all day for 10 hours or more. Some vehicles like shared police cars and things like that might run for 24+ hours. So they will take an absolute beating and nobody knows how well these cars will hold up under that. Hell your car might not even be charged up when you need to use it again the next morning. And don’t be fooled. There is still tons of maintenance on an electric car. Still pretty much all the same moving parts and systems.

They idle alot its hell on engines and uses alot if fuel. They can use them for 2 shifts and gas on the third while they charge.

Manufacturers could put a small generator in the frunk to power radios ,lights and climate controls to help make batteries last longer or if stopped for long periods .

Cost of the vehicle would be offset by fuel and maintenance costs.

Do you have any idea how much power those cars draw? They usually have dual HD alternators and batteries. Some even have 3 batteries. The light packages alone draw crazy power. Some even need high idle switches to make sure they are generating enough power when parked. I just don’t think batteries are there yet to handle this.

The LLV uses the GM "iron duke" 2.5l I have run that engine in a CJ7 and a S10 and it was far quieter than a LLV. USPS must use some craptacular mufflers and no cats on theirs

It’d have to be a pretty good size generator. And the electric powered car would have a gas generator?Those engines pollute more than a modern car engine.

It was at or below 0 degrees here when they started their routes this morning. Combine that and the fact that it's nothing but hills around me and the range will be cut really short.

I looked into number and at this point I think vehicle cost would be the issue. I'm not worried about emissions rather cost of operation and maintenance.
Typical maintenance and fuel on a police vehicle is 13-15k a year the cost of a gas car is 25-30k so the ev would have to be cheaper than that.
Police cars on average put 20k miles a year thats roughly 60 miles a day on an ev with a 200-300 mile range . Modern evs with heat pumps use 20 percent of the battery per charge for climate control. Most the time police cars sit there doing nothing but idling. Cars are replaced around 100k . Ev may last longer before replacement.
This is depending on where im sure a city is different from a town or highways cars . Out west im sure they drive more than around here.
