I have all the shooting area I need. From a 100 yard "pistol" range in the yard, to a 1000+ yard perfectly level unused corn field.
But I saw an old friend the other day, and agreed to go to a local range he belongs to, so we went yesterday.
While we were there I met a few shooters. There was one guy who most people were kind of ignoring.
He had one handgun, a 6 inch S&W 686. After most of the people left, he gradually moved closer to us.
He started talking to us, he was friendly. Then my friend asked what kind of holster he uses for his 686. The guy says, "no need for a holster". Ok, cool, you do you fella.
I had 6 handguns with me. I was firing my usual carry gun, a gen 1 Shield 9mm I bought in 2014. Its just a great gun.
My friend was firing his Sig 365 9mm, which is one of his carry guns.
The stranger walks over and casually says, "you guys ever shoot real guns, with real bullets?"
I said, "excuse me".
He says, "just messin with ya, I just never seen the advantage to a tiny lady gun".
I had absolutely nothing to say to this guy, but, "they are great for up close self defense and concealing" or something like that just spewed from my mouth.
He says, "who have you pissed off enough to need self defense?"
I said, "could you move down a couple spots".
There were 10 lanes at this outdoor pistol range. We were in #2, this guy decided to use #3. There was nobody there except us and him.
He says, "I suppose you have a shotgun under your bed for the invisible bad guys breaking in your house too, huh?"
We ignored him. He then says, "you know you're much more likely to be attacked by a shark than need a gun for self defense".
My friend couldn't resist, so he said, "if we get attacked by a shark 400 miles from an ocean, we have other things to worry about"...or something like that.
I was a good boy, I kept my mouth shut, and eventually the guy left. With the amount of self defense knowledge and statistics in my brain I could have destroyed this Fudd, but I resisted. Two guys got out of a truck that had pulled in about 15 minutes before the guy left.
One of the guys says, "I was hoping he was going to leave soon".
These two guys had several handguns, a couple AR-15s, and a Mini 14. Both were carrying small 9mm handguns. :)

Yeah there are some weirdos out there. My club is private (only 200 members) but I am sure there are some whack nuts among them.

Since FRTs are legal here there are some people showing up to the range and doing mag dumps. Then there are others that will either shoot from outside the bays or in case of the rifle range go 50 yards down range and shoot pistols instead of waiting for a pistol bay to open up. Shooting targets that leave debris and not picking up their brass when they are done. All this conduct against the rules, but they do it anyway. I think that is the reason all the 2’x4’ signs with the rules painted on them were posted on every bay a few months ago.

The land owner lives just down the road and during our range orientation brief we were told he doesn’t want to listen to automatic ( FRT, Bumpfire or real auto) Fire.

I get the fun of the FRT and figure if you are going to break the rules might as well do it suppressed and when no one is around….

Usually when I go there are only a few bays being occupied, mainly by guys practicing for IDPA or Dads with their kids, so I just keep to myself shoot what I brought and go home.

About the only time I converse with anyone is on the rifle range on the rare occasion there is someone else shooting rifles that day.

It is one of the nicer range complexes around with a 100 dollar a year membership and a two year waiting list to get in.

I found it odd at this particular range. Its the Falconer Rod and Gun in Falconer NY.
The members there are very self defense oriented, and they hold a lot of self defense classes there, and the NYS pistol permit classes.
Many of the members are younger.
I could see this at the Jamestown Rifle Club. That place only has a 50 foot indoor pistol range, and a 100 yard rifle range. All the other clubs around have at least 400 yards.
To be a member of the Jamestown Rifle Club there are many bylaws. The most important of which is you MUST be a member in good standing of the NRA....no exceptions!!
This place is not owned or run by the NRA. They have nothing to do with the NRA. They are all just a bunch of 60+ year old NRA Fudds. Without exaggerating ive been there when there are 25+ people there, and the youngest is mid 50s. A bunch of good old boys with their flannel shirts tucked in over their big bellies, and John Deere hats.
I realize that may describe some of you guys, heck, it describes half of my family!!

This was the place I took my NYS pistol permit class years ago. Ive told this here before.
The 65 year old, NRA certified instructor told an entire class of pistol permit students that the reason he carries a gun is because if hes out to dinner with his wife, and someone gives her shit, they will die on the spot!
When he left the room during the break, I told the entire class that this guy is an idiot, and if you do what he said, you will be put in prison for murder. Every single person said, "oh, absolutely, the guy is nuts!"....or a variation of that.

At first I thought you were shooting at the club to which I belong, but I realized that you would not drive a hundred miles just to go shooting.

You have to get him to sign a liability waiver if you did that. Can not hold liable if the gun hurts your pride, you start voting conservative, makes you realize you were wrong all these years, have feeling of inadequacy afterwards, your ego gets bruised, your fragile bones break, you go limp wristed when shooting more demure calibers, and so on…..

This was the first time Ive been to a range in 5 years, and this guy was there.
There is a really nice local club I just might join. I would join just so I could meet some new shooters. For the last decade its the same 4 guys...and my sister...who come shoot at our house. I swear 3 of them just come for the range.
The best thing about the club I might join is there are very few members, and it is by far the best range in the area. The bad part is the process to join. You need a "sponsor", which isnt an issue, one of the guys that shoots at my house has been a member for 35 years.
But, then you have to attend 3 monthly meetings, have a sit down with the president, and give a "speech" at one of the meetings. This is all before you can join. They want to make sure you fit in before they accept you.
The wildest thing about this place is they have a fully operational, members only bar at the range. Ive been there many times as a guest. There is a group of about 15 regulars who get plastered all the time. There's a pool table, darts, and a juke box, its a freaking bar at a gun range!
They have a monthly meet up called "Shoot 'n Shots". Yep, you shoot for awhile, then go do shots.

I don't mind the FUDs. Their numbers are low. I always strike up a conversation and while at the range. Not for the conversation so much but to identify odd balls. They come in all forms. Include tactical wannabe's. Stay frosty gents.

Pa is a MG state but for example, around Pittsburgh, very FEW gun ranges allow FRT's or MG's.
Waiting lists are long, and NYS type rules,.

Specific MG ranges do exist.
This is the big one.

Sounds like part of the energized Socialist Internal Defense Gang. They’re armed for a true purpose. There’s no reason for you to do the same.

About ten years ago I met a fellow at the range I go to, he had just retired From Remington Arms after 40 years. He had never shot a flintlock rifle before, and from the sound of it had never even been in proximity of one. So I gave him the short course on the operation and loading of a rifle that helped win our independence. He fired off a couple rounds and was grinning ear to ear which made me grin from ear to ear as well. Anyway, he started talking about modern AR's and why does anyone need something like that, etc., etc.. When he finished and I figured it was my turn I calmly and pretty thoroughly gave him a good five minute lecture in the importance of the second amendment, what it means in real terms, and how that lineage connects from the rifle he just shot to the scary black guns he was dead set against. There was no debate, I just wanted to educate him, and at the very least cause him to think.

I honestly think hes just a local no nothing. Probably lived here in the boonies his whole life, and doesn't understand the real world.
What I wanted to tell him, but didn't want to waste the words, was that the odds of needing a handgun for self defense against a human are very low, but not zero.
That ONE time that a nut job decides to stab you in the Walmart parking lot, wouldn't it be dumb to not have a way to save your life?
Ive seen a lot of videos and interviews on Active Self Protection, not one single time has anyone said that they knew this time was coming. Almost every one of them say something like, "I could have seen this coming at 3am in a rough part of town, but not at 11:30 am in the parking lot of McDonald's!"
The guy was younger than me, he was 45-50 id guess. We were told he was a supervisor at the Cummins engine plant, and that nobody at the club likes him. APPARENTLY he is verbally abusive to his wife, and most there assume he beats her. This is just what the 2 guys in the truck told us.

At another local range/club, the one I may join, has a sign near the range that says, "You CAN wear tactical gear on the range, but SHOULD you?"
Its meant as a joke, but im sure some guys get butt hurt. :)

I've converted many an anti by taking them shooting then explaining how they'd just broken several NYS laws by touching a pistol, then leapfrogging from that to the many other stupid laws. You can see a light go off in their head when they've just done something totally safe and reasonable that violates the law.

This thread has reminded me why I need to improve my backyard range.

I really need a solid covered shooting position. I've been here far too long to keep using the folding table.

Also considering adding a zip line target setup so I can get longer range without having a major hike to reset targets.

Wire spool makes an easy shooting desk after cutting out body placement points which can become the stool. Putting pvc pipe in the ground set to the placement of 1 1/2 Target stand allows cheap replacements and known distance while being able to remove.

I want to laugh at the post but I can't. It actually makes me mad.

This is exactly who voted for Cuomo/hochul.

This is exactly who the left and media will interview when they want to start an anti gun push, they will "interview a gun enthusiast super fudd, and super fudd will go on to say how much he likes guns and doesn't believe anyone needs any of that nonsense and that he supports xxxxxxxx plan...."

He is more dangerous to our cause than an actual avowed anti gunner. He is a useful pawn idiot, a true bumbling wolf in sheeps clothing for gun rights.

Having witnessed the birth of the Popularity of the AR in the 1970's after the VN war, it was amazing how the demand grew, driven by wanting to have what the soldiers carried.

It is the same today on other states.

I registered my early SP1's, and other full featured AW's that I can shoot in public on ranges. Safe Queens for the most part.

Mass shooters tend to need them, historically speaking.

Not a great home defense weapon as the bullets tend to go through nearby homes, too.

What? What are you trying to prove thAt no one Neeeeeds an AR????

I disagree.

There is a reason why swat teams use AR15 Variants. If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for you.

Ammo choice matters, a lot.

Don't choose something like a penetrating round. (Sounds obvious) But it's apparently not to everyone.

Many other guns have far worse over penetration problems than an AR15 with some sort of soft point of frangible tip. Especially something that will start to breakup and tumble after it contacts a surface this greatly mitigates risk to others.

Even more so, a shorter barrel ideally suited for CQB environments have even lower muzzle velocity than your 20" from 'Nam further reducing the risk of over penetration.

Plenty of choices are far more risk of unintentional over penetration.

Apparently he doesn't watch the news where every day locally someone is murdered, raped or a form of theft. Im guessing he was a boomer.

The AR-15 Rifle and it's similarly designed contemporaries really didn't gain notary or popularity until Bill Clinton and the Democrats decided the Country needed an "Assault Weapon" Ban, and elementary psychology was once again proved that the best way to increase demand on a product is to make it difficult or illegal to obtain.

I'm not sure what's the "same today on other States"?

I know a very few people that Registered their AW's, but most clearly stated "Fuck You, I'm not registering Jack Schitt"....of those that did, IIRC all did or do have jobs with the State and were clearly advised to do so or risk the loss of paycheck and pension.

Please cite the Report or Papers that factually supports the "need" or actual use of MSR's in Mass Shootings...CNN and MSNBC or democrat sponsored News Stories will not be accepted as they tend to be agenda driven, using the Delphi Method to bolster their anti-gun position.

Ever been in a Firefight? How about defending your Home/family from uninvited intruders into your Home? Clearly the prospect of bullets/fragments penetrating your own walls and into someone else's but your neighbor is more likely to suffer damage from the Tree in your Yard falling on His House. BTW: Tests with .22 Shorts (considered about the lowest power common cartridge does show penetration through Sheetrock and certainly most Glass.
Think that SWAT Team firing off shots inside your House gives a fuck about any but their own?
