REPORT: More Than HALF of New York Students Grades 3-5 Failed Basic Reading Tests This Year

More than half of students in grades 3-5 in New York state failed basic reading tests this year. It’s an absolute disgrace.
In New York City, they spend upwards of $40,000 on each student per school year. What is the money going to> Lessons on critical race theory and gender studies topics? Social justice activism?

The New York Post reports:

NY 3rd-5th graders fail basic reading tests with more than half not even proficient: data
Preliminary results released this week by the state Education Department that 57% of 3rd graders, 52% of 4th graders and 57% of 5th graders failed to make the grade on their 2025-26 English Language Arts tests.
City kids in grades 3-8 saw a 6% drop in their ELA scores from last year, with just about half overall rating proficient.
Overall, just 48% of students in the testing grades, 4th-8th, rated proficient on the ELA — a “significant” 5% plunge from the previous year, the department said.

There are a couple elephants in the room driving the horrific numbers and free fall performance. The OP article just gives it lip service.

Most media will give the shock clickbait but won't or can't discuss the obvious causes.

They will not share the demographics which show the root causes. WTF did they expect to happen with a foreign invasion, a loss of family values, a Covid teacher vacation, and a teachers' union whose leadership is a liberal socialist PAC.

The OP mentions 40% of children in New York State are foreign-born or the children of illegal aliens. Guess what that does to a class room.

The OP mentions 85% of the Immigrant minors from third world hell holes. Guess what that does to standardized testing performance.

An honest education debate has to include discussions of the - illegal alien invasion as well as the - fall of a conservative nuclear family (no shit, ineffecient flawed home schooling by an under qualified teacher still dramatically over performs the overall average performance) and an - unaccountable public education vote laundering machine.

Ignorant fucks are easier to manipulate and the arrogance of this ignorance causes them to think they are smarter than those over them...it's all by design.

And what percentage of NYS students are children of recent 3rd world immigrations/illegal aliens?
According to the Schuyler Center for Analysis and Advocacy, about 37.5% of all children in New York State (roughly 1.4 million children) are in a recent immigrant family.

Data compiled by the New York KIDS COUNT project, however, claims less than 10% of K-12 students across New York State are from an undocumented immigrant household.

Not all the teachers are bad or lazy.

It's administration not allowing them to do their job.

For the past several years, my daughter was a 5th grade teacher in a large city school district.

Minimum grade they can give is a 60. No one gets held back. She had one student who literally did nothing all year but show up on occasion. Congratulations! You're now a 6th grade teacher's problem.

The amount of bullshit they have to go through to suspend a student is insane.

Student showed up to school drunk. Got suspended. The kid's birthing unit complained. Their kid wasn't the one who brought the liquor on the bus. Couldn't understand why their kid was getting suspended.

Cafeteria - boy asked to go to the bathroom. Bathroom was in use so he was told he was going to have to wait. He whipped it out and pissed on the floor. "Parent" was angry that they wanted to suspend him. It wasn't his fault. He asked.

I’ll be the first to admit I can’t freaking spell. I try, but I can’t. I can read though. I can tell you plenty of adults don’t know how to read based on what I see. It’s amazing 35 year olds got out of 5th grade based on what I see.

I want more data. What location and what demographic are the failing students of? What is their attendance rate? Like mentioned before, its not just the schools or the teachers. When the parents do not make the kids go to school do not give a shit or even deny services they are not helping at all.

My ex Chinese girlfriend lived in toronto . She had a masters degree in engineering . Her daughter knew zero English when she came to Canada. They just threw her in a regular class .. first two days she sat under her desk and cried . A year later she was speaking decent English. When she was 6 years old her mother had her doing algebra . We broke up after a while and years later this woman moved to the Rochester area and had gotten married. We both had a mutual friend that kept me informed about her life . When she the daughter was taking algebra here she at times corrected the teacher on a math problem . The mother told me when the daughter entered high school play time was over . She would be a Dr like her grandmother or an engineer . . I believe the mother had a photographic memory and she said when she was studying at the university in China no one could touch her academically .. I am sure the daughter will make a good contribution to this society.

Democrat solution : Throw more money at the schools!

Reality : Education begins at home. Parent s need to be involved in their child's education every single day. Instead, school is a daycare for many

Ive said for many years if you swapped the faculty from a failing inner city school with thst of an affluent suburb, nothing much would change in terms of the schools performance.

This problem is country-wide, not just NY state. Real education in the U.S. starts in colleges.

I did not do well in School; it took two years of remedial College Classes to learn what I should have learned in High School...Vo-Tech allowed me to graduate.
Wasn't stupid (ignorant yes) just wasn't interested in most of what they were instructing.

I can believe it, sounds familiar.
Back in the 70's my grandfather worked for the Palm Beach school board.
They had a program, PTA............................Push Them Ahead !

I had a friend that taught high school in Harrison.
They moved out to Gettysburg as she and her husband were big history buffs.
I went to visit her one weekend and asked how was her new job.
She said terrible. The students told her they couldn't wait to graduate so they can work in McDonalds !

UC Berkeley Math Professor Makes a Startling Revelation About Her Students as She Blasts School’s Woke Admissions Policy, Which an Obama Admin. Official Implemented

One of the nation’s supposedly most rigorous colleges is completely infested with unqualified students, forcing a calculus teacher to come forward with a stunning revelation.
Zvezdelina Stankova, a professor of mathematics at UC Berkeley, wrote a damning op-ed in the San Francisco Standard last week excoriating the university’s woke admissions standards, which Then-President Janet Napolitano implemented.
Back in 2020, Napolitano, who served as Homeland Security Secretary under former President Barack Obama, overruled a task force that urged the school to phase out the SAT and ACT.
She argued that doing so was proper due to pandemic disruptions and ‘equity’ concerns.
The Regents voted later that year to make testing optional. Then, a court ruling focused on access for students with disabilities required UC to become test-blind through 2025.
Due to this policy, Stankova noted that because the kids are so far behind on mathematics, she has to spend her time teaching middle-school math to them.
“Some students are five to eight years behind in mathematics. Office hours that should be spent discussing integrals instead become lessons on fractions and basic algebra you would expect students to learn in middle school,” Stankova wrote in the San Francisco Standard on August 14.

They had the same program in Polk County Florida...took me two years of remedial college courses to learn what I should have in High School...
With students sequestered in their homes for covid, the educational damage will take decades to resolve, but then again They want them just smart enough to run the machines and fill out the paperwork...

There is a chinese restaurant near me that I frequent. Of course, it's a family run place. The entire family contributes. Two daughters and a son along with mom, dad, uncle perhaps (?) And grandmother (?). Anyways, the youngest daughter and I became quite good friends. She's only 11 now, but I met her when she was 6. Her mother has her doing 2nd year Trig. No bullshit. She'll be well into calculous pretty soon, I'm sure. Super smart little girl. But she's really still just a little girl, loves drawing animé ( which she's VERY talented at ) and cats, playing with legos, just what an 11 year old should love.

Meanwhile, my neighbor has a 14 year old boy that can't figure out how the mailbox works.

Family Structure Determines Kids' Success In School More Than Race Or Income, Researchers Say

While universities debate whether to skip standardized admissions tests and the University of Michigan waives first-term grades for some incoming students, new research suggests that relaxing standards might not be the best way to help kids who are struggling in school.
The new report by the Institute for Family Studies (IFS) and the American Enterprise Institute, based on data collected from grade school students by the National Survey of Children’s Health, focused on how kids performed in school and what they said about their home life. The report found that “family structure is a more powerful predictor of school problems, academic performance, and depression than are race and poverty.”
The Department of Education’s Nation’s Report Card sorts results by race, sex or income, but it ignores family structures even though it has been collecting data on that factor since 2013, researchers said.
By contrast, the report looked at “whether or not kids are being raised by their own mother and father,” IFS Senior Fellow Brad Wilcox said, and they found that family structure was often a more important factor in children’s well-being.
The study reported that 74 percent of children from “intact, married-parent families” achieved top grades (As and Bs), compared with 60 percent of children from “other family structures.” In addition, the IFS stated that children who were not raised by both biological parents were 47 percent more likely to have disciplinary problems at school and more than twice as likely to be depressed.
“Raising children in a stable married family is incredibly helpful to kids,” Wilcox said.

The local Chinese Take-Out has owned and operated the same little place for at least sixteen years: Two Sons were born here, educated here, work in the Restaurant, and are great kids...Father never speaks (I don't think he knows any English any more than I know any Chinese) Mom can get through an Order just fine...Despite cultural differences, they're as FUNCTIONAL an American Family as anyone could ask.
