REPORT: More Than HALF of New York Students Grades 3-5 Failed Basic Reading Tests This Year​

More than half of students in grades 3-5 in New York state failed basic reading tests this year. It’s an absolute disgrace.
In New York City, they spend upwards of $40,000 on each student per school year. What is the money going to> Lessons on critical race theory and gender studies topics? Social justice activism?

The New York Post reports:

NY 3rd-5th graders fail basic reading tests with more than half not even proficient: data
Preliminary results released this week by the state Education Department that 57% of 3rd graders, 52% of 4th graders and 57% of 5th graders failed to make the grade on their 2025-26 English Language Arts tests.
City kids in grades 3-8 saw a 6% drop in their ELA scores from last year, with just about half overall rating proficient.
Overall, just 48% of students in the testing grades, 4th-8th, rated proficient on the ELA — a “significant” 5% plunge from the previous year, the department said.

There are a couple elephants in the room driving the horrific numbers and free fall performance. The OP article just gives it lip service.

Most media will give the shock clickbait but won't or can't discuss the obvious causes.

They will not share the demographics which show the root causes. WTF did they expect to happen with a foreign invasion, a loss of family values, a Covid teacher vacation, and a teachers' union whose leadership is a liberal socialist PAC.

The OP mentions 40% of children in New York State are foreign-born or the children of illegal aliens. Guess what that does to a class room.

The OP mentions 85% of the Immigrant minors from third world hell holes. Guess what that does to standardized testing performance.

An honest education debate has to include discussions of the - illegal alien invasion as well as the - fall of a conservative nuclear family (no shit, ineffecient flawed home schooling by an under qualified teacher still dramatically over performs the overall average performance) and an - unaccountable public education vote laundering machine.

Not all the teachers are bad or lazy.

It's administration not allowing them to do their job.

For the past several years, my daughter was a 5th grade teacher in a large city school district.

Minimum grade they can give is a 60. No one gets held back. She had one student who literally did nothing all year but show up on occasion. Congratulations! You're now a 6th grade teacher's problem.

The amount of bullshit they have to go through to suspend a student is insane.

Student showed up to school drunk. Got suspended. The kid's birthing unit complained. Their kid wasn't the one who brought the liquor on the bus. Couldn't understand why their kid was getting suspended.

Cafeteria - boy asked to go to the bathroom. Bathroom was in use so he was told he was going to have to wait. He whipped it out and pissed on the floor. "Parent" was angry that they wanted to suspend him. It wasn't his fault. He asked.

I want more data. What location and what demographic are the failing students of? What is their attendance rate? Like mentioned before, its not just the schools or the teachers. When the parents do not make the kids go to school do not give a shit or even deny services they are not helping at all.

My ex Chinese girlfriend lived in toronto . She had a masters degree in engineering . Her daughter knew zero English when she came to Canada. They just threw her in a regular class .. first two days she sat under her desk and cried . A year later she was speaking decent English. When she was 6 years old her mother had her doing algebra . We broke up after a while and years later this woman moved to the Rochester area and had gotten married. We both had a mutual friend that kept me informed about her life . When she the daughter was taking algebra here she at times corrected the teacher on a math problem . The mother told me when the daughter entered high school play time was over . She would be a Dr like her grandmother or an engineer . . I believe the mother had a photographic memory and she said when she was studying at the university in China no one could touch her academically .. I am sure the daughter will make a good contribution to this society.

I did not do well in School; it took two years of remedial College Classes to learn what I should have learned in High School...Vo-Tech allowed me to graduate.
Wasn't stupid (ignorant yes) just wasn't interested in most of what they were instructing.
