I have noticed a problem. Trigger randomly locks up. I have reliably created the lockup by holding it vertically, barrel up. Sometimes I need to jiggle it while vertical to lock it up but it does lock up repeatedly. It usually becomes free when help horizontally but sometimes requires to be...
LCR had a nicer trigger but the grips would have been just a tad to bulky for the kind of pocket carry I had in mind. The very low weight of the 340 PD will also help for pocket carry in running pants with no belt.
Also I just thought the thing was cool honestly.
S&W 340 PD, an 11.8oz .357 Magnum.
It won't be so much an EDC gun for me but rather a pocket gun to have on me for my early morning runs. Also as a 'too lazy/rushed to put on a belt holster gun such as when just going outside for a few minutes to get the mail, take out the garbage or to make a...
Finally got it.
Doing dry fire practice now. Working on staging the trigger on the second click. I can break the pull clean from that second click.
The laser dot is helpful for this.
Smith & Wesson 340 PD, the lightest .357 Magnum you can buy.
Ammo on the left are the intended carry round, .38 +p Golden Saber bonded. On the right are .38 148gr standard pressure wadcutters for practice, in the center are 148gr .357 Magnums to satisfy my curiosity. If I can get through a...
Welp, hit a setback. My buddy backed out ofntge gun deal so now I will be waiting until payday (Thursday) to pay off the remaining balance.
Worked 60nhoursnlast week so I'll still make the nut.
Taurus is one of those companies that is difficult to get a concensus on. Some of their models are considered gtg, some are considered garbage, most of their products suffer from suspect quality control but that isn't unique to Taurus by any means.
Their revolvers are good looking pieces that's...
I haven't picked it up just yet. I've had it on lay away with $400 or so to go. However I have been pestering a buddy to buy my PPQ and related accouterments for $500 and it looks like he is ready to pull the trigger this Monday. I will then pay off the remaining balance on the 340 the...
..........kinda? As per usual for me I say I'm looking for one thing and then go in another direction. In this case I am spending scope money on an S&W 340PD for a pocket carry gun. I made the mistake of handling some J frames at the LGS and got a serious case of "gotta have its" then...
I got the holster, I ordered the ridiculously expensive laser grips and I think I will have the remaining balance of the gun itself paid off next week.
No it is not tiring. It is a significant distinction that we as a society have allowed to become blurred since Bush used 9/11 to bamboozle the public into accepting a police state.
There is far too much 'us and them" mentality in law enforcement today.
The widely held notion that private...
Well, that's what Elmer Keith and Co. did. They came up with super hot .38 loads and created the .357 Magnum. With the 340/60 series we have that option if we really desired. I'm just struck by the pace of firearms progess between the short time these two cartridges were developed. From what...
I understand all about the 38 Special originally being a black powder round and the implications thereof but it is still kinda crazy that the 9mm 124gr +p JHP on the left (1150 fps) is significantly more powerful than the .38 Special 125gr +p JHP (975 fps) on the right.
Especially when you...
There shouldn't be so many public jobs to begin with.
We treat people as children and so they act like children. If people are left to suffer the full consequences of their actions the adults that are children will become extinct leaving the true adults to live in peace.
If you park in front...
It's illegal to block fire hydrants, qualified immunity shouldn't apply. If someone is doing something illegal then they shouldn't have any legal recourse for any damages that arise from their actions. That goes for private citizens and public servants.
Actions must have consequences.
"In the United States, qualified immunity is a legal principle that grants government officials performing discretionary (optional) functions immunity from lawsuits for damages unless the plaintiff shows that the official violated "clearly established statutory or constitutional rights of which...
I refer to organizational restrictions for military personnel which unless things have changed recently are extraordinarily strict. In garrison that is. Basically you can't carry anything except at the range or in specific duty cases. MPs have their own regulations of course.
When I was in I...
I actually think LEOs should be subject to GREATER restrictions as to what they carry. On duty that is, privately no separate restrictions beyond what private citizens have. Also get rid of qualified immunity.
Also also- Police officers ARE civilians. Civilian simply refers to anyone not in...
well let's start with that shall we?
The Gold Dot light magnums are completely unavailable from anywhere it seems. Y'all give me a heads up if you see any for sale.
The Magtechs are 148 wadcutters, seems like a good load to learn the ropes of the 340 PD
Every test I have seen of the .38 Special...
I'm gonna get a box of the Gold Dot 135gr short barrel specific magnums. They are a light magnum load that is pretty much a 38 +p+.
I'll see if it is tolerable, if so I will make that tge primary carry load. If not I will go with the 135gr .38 +p Gold Dots.
SG ammo is selling the .38 Special...
I've never been much of a trigger snob. For example I am so pleased with the factory trigger on my Gen 5 Glock 19 I will never put an aftermarket one on. What I felt in the shop whether on the 638 or 642 or the 340 seemed absolutely fine to me. I specifically did my little test where I see...
When I dry fired the various J frames in the shop, including the 340, I didn't find the pulls to be all that heavy. Long yes, but smooth and easy to work through with a final bit of stacking before the break. I am sure with a little practice I can manage it. I do find that a smooth and even...
Well again, it's gonna be for use in aa few specific instances, instances where the 340's low weight will be helpful, namely riding in the pocket of running pants with no belt. And I'll be using .38 Specials exclusively. I'm not a great shot but I do take pride that I am at least a competent...
Yeah, I'm just looking to be able to make 5 .38 Special torso hits at bad breath distance. I do hope that it will be at least a little fun to shoot with light target loads. I like to shoot after all, would be nice to be able plink with 100 or so wadcutters.
Next gun will be a 686 Plus I think...
Actually I plan on putting some Crimson Trace grips on. I'm generally not a laser guy but on a tiny J frame with rudimentary sights I think it makes much more sense.
And again this will mostly be my companion on my little 30 minute O'dark thirty runs and for little 10 minute errands. The...
Keep in mind the 340 pd weighs a scant 11.8oz. Opinions of 340pd owners both on these forums and on the YouTubes indicate highly unpleasant levels of recoil when shooting fullhouse .357 loads from this helium weight gun.
But yes, I certainly did not enjoy shooting my buddy's nuclear hot, 300gr...
So some hours ago I took y'alls advice and ordered a Mika pocket holster (brown with gold thread, classy) and to my surprise the gentleman what makes them calls me up over the phone! We had a nice little conversation asks if I have any questions and assures me I won't be disappointed with my...
Ah, excellent. I have been pursuing .38 Special ballistic gel test videos and of what's available at the LGS the Hornady is the only one that seems worth a damn in a snub nose. Even then it seems marginal. Gold Dots and Golden Sabres seem to do fairly well out of such a short barrel so I...
Hmmnn. My LGS stocks that Hornady load BUT apparently S&W specifies that the lightest load to be used in the PD is not less than 120gr. Something to do with wear on the titanium cylinder.
The HST load would be my top pick but Federal discontinued it. My LGS does stock the Federal Punch stuff...
Well, due to the seed @Xae289 planted in my mind I have placed $200 down on a new 340 PD. I have 2 months to pay it off.
Oh I have no doubt of that. The 340 feels like it is made out of helium. I have no intention of running any 357 magnum through it, other a than a cylinders worth just to...
My LGS has a 2 payment lay away program. I'm gonna go in later today to see if they would be amenable to a 3 payment plan on the 340 PD. If so I'll get it.
What do we all like for a good .38 Special defensive load? Federal used to have a great HST load but it's discontinued.
I'm still leaning towards the Model 638/642. Next time in in the shop I'll check our an LCR.
Something like the LCP would likely work better for me but honestly I have been hankering for a revolver for the longest time now.
Since this will be only for occasional and/or short duration carry some...
