I've caught them on sale for $118 for the simple dot version. And you're absolutely right. You can make a bomb proof red dot for much less. Much less complicated with some lenses and an emitter. I have a stigmatizm so I started messing with the prism scopes. I only kept my aim point.

I think the only exception is the holosun red dots. Otherwise yeah, I think the bare minimum is like leupold or burris.

I have some of the 1x prisms. I think they have more eye relief than the 3x. I also hate exposed turrets on anything but a target rifle so I haven't dove into the 3x prisms. I would like an acog, but hard to justify when I have other Japanese scopes and aimpoints.

Let us know how it goes. For a fixed 4x scope, a weaver k4 made in the USA or Japan would be my pick.
