I shoot .177 pellets and can get away with a hand pump. It's a workout, but one fill lasts me 4-7 days. Hill hand pump with air dryer is very good quality. Pumps and compressors also have to be maintained.
All depends on amount of usage and age of the rubber seals. I shoot air rifle almost every day as part of my training. Have to change seals every year or two. Also rubber doesn't age well and will eventually deteriorate.
Which PCP, depends on what do you want to do with it. Each airgun requires maitenance specific to that gun. That's the hard part about keeping them running. They work well in the beginning but eventually seals or valves or other parts need to be replaced. There is a learning curve for each...
