Back from my elk hunt in CO

Little over an hour southeast of Montrose. Unit 65, Uncompahgre National Forest. 1st rifle tags are given out by a draw, but they're pretty much a guaranteed draw.

    Pistol companion to the 10/22

I'd be on that like flies on shit. Every one I see on gunbroker or in the LGS isn't worth the price to me. I'll keep looking. If you ever see another, feel free to PM me :D

    Who's had Survival training?

I would never go on a full out challenging adventure with a group of total strangers. I like you guys, but I don't like you that much! I'd be down for something like I mentioned before.

    Pistol companion to the 10/22

A .22 revolver would be sweet, but they seem to be a good amount more expensive than their semi auto brethren.

Libertarian VP Candidate Admits Defeat, Tells Voters To Pick Hillary

If we were in a battleground state, you may have a point. But, let's be real. In NY, you could combine the votes for the Republicans, Conservatives, Libertarians, Constitutionalists, and all the other parties, and the Democrats would still win.

    Who's had Survival training?

Without a doubt, it has to be exposure. I'd say that would be the case in most places though (maybe not coastal areas and parts of the SE). We have decently warm summers, but any time other than July and August, it can get cold. It snowed upwards of 3' in the Adirondacks on Memorial Day a few...

    Who's had Survival training?

Me and a few friends actually talked about doing this a few years ago. It wouldn't have been a "Let's go survive" trip, but it would have been a, "Everyone bring something, whether it's an object or demonstration, on something survival related." I'm definitely interested in something like this...

Libertarian VP Candidate Admits Defeat, Tells Voters To Pick Hillary

This isn't exactly a surprise. Carl Bernstein speculated that Weld may 'defect' and endorse Hillary if Weld thought that he and Johnson would cause Trump to get elected. Carl Bernstein: Weld May Quit and Help Hillary, 'Despises' Trump I said it once, and I'll say it again. Johnson was only...

    SHTF. Are you ready?

    1) Do you carry some form of shelter or protection against the elements? Not in my truck, but I do have something in my BOB. 2) Is your plan to drive somewhere, walk, or what else? you can list them in the priority you plan them. First choice is to drive somewhere. Second choice is to walk...

Report: Buffalo NY, Is Second Largest Market For Gun Crimes!

I'd find it hard to believe there's another attorney with the same name. It has to be the same guy. "We have states that surround New York State that have different kinds of gun laws," attorney James Tresmond said. "You can go right across the border to Pennsylvania, buy any kind of gun you...

Total US Firearms: Not 300 Million, but 412-660 Million?

Nobody really has any idea, and that's the way it should be. Who knows how many older guns that were shipped to someone's house or bought from a store without a NICS check are still around.

I ain't gonna lie, NYGF has some great features..

It's old and when it isn't kept up to date, you don't have features. There are always complications upgrading software, but it's something that really needs to be done.

Vehicles for SHTF or bugging out.

My 4wd Frontier actually did pretty decent on the "roads" in CO. Go slow and plan your route. It's got the short bed, but I could add a trailer or cargo carrier to the hitch and it would be serviceable. All it needs to go is about 45 minutes. Load up the guns, ammo, clothes, and a crap ton of food.

Back from my elk hunt in CO

Yeah, I'd suggest a 20° bag, or maybe even a little lower. If we hike in next time, it may get a couple degrees colder. Also, it was a little warmer than an average year by maybe 5 degrees. You can end up like me with 3 backpacks, a couple sleeping bags (that I never use), and a whole slew of...

Back from my elk hunt in CO

Yup. I'll keep better track of my costs next time, but it was about $2000 this time. I had a lot of the stuff that is needed though. I had a nice backpack, sleep system, truck, binoculars, jetboil, gun, etc. I had to buy about $90 binocular harness $150 in coolers (which will get used for other...

A fun little poll that I seriously could not answer

In all honestly, I don't think he gives two shits about NYC either. He's messed with MTA and has bouts with De Blasio pretty frequently. He's a left leaning Democrat who isn't truly left wing enough for the vocal people in his party. I think he's running himself up for a presidential bid in ~8...

Back from my elk hunt in CO

I've heard that you can take the Pennsylvania safety course online and NY will accept it. The NY resident license isn't that expensive (something like $50 including doe tags). Shoot one deer and process it yourself and it's probably would pay for itself. You just have to figure out if the wife...

A fun little poll that I seriously could not answer

nah, I truly hate Cuomo. He's at least partly responsible for the recent housing collapse. As head of HUD, he had the influence to stop Freddie and Fannie from giving loans out to certain individuals that probably shouldn't have them. He listened to lobbyists about yield spread premiums and let...

A fun little poll that I seriously could not answer

Obama is useless without support from Congress, so, all said, he isn't going to screw us too much without other people joining him. Same goes for the gun grabber Feinstein. She can't do shit without Congress and POTUS. Hillary hasn't done much to us personally, but she is despicable. So... I'd...

Back from my elk hunt in CO

Yeah... It's a long drive for sure Cleck and I drove 32 hours straight, each way. What is the difference in price between a cow and bull tag in ID? In CO it is only like $200 difference between a cow tag and an either sex tag.

Back from my elk hunt in CO

You'll get there. :) This trip was pretty reasonably priced. I think all-in I was about $2k. Gas, food, supplies, camping gear, tag, and other odds and ends. I'm looking to spend $1500 next time, and that should be easily doable. I'll bet if you could find 4 people to go, you could get the cost...

Back from my elk hunt in CO

No guide. I did tons of research though. The Colorado parks and wildlife website provides a ton of information about draw statistics, success rate, etc. I looked for an easy to draw tag in a unit with decent success rate. I think everyone that applied for the elk tag drew it this year. I...

We were about 45 minutes or an hour southeast of Montrose in the Uncompahgre National Forest. Just a little northeast of Ouray. Have fun in Idaho. Make sure to bring bear protection if you're in grizzly country. I've heard that they hear gunshots and go towards them for an easy meal. I don't...

Back from my elk hunt in CO

CO was beautiful and the people I interacted with were all very friendly. It's hard giving other hunters tips because it can reduce your chances, but I did get some help from them. I'm pretty confident that I'll notch my tag next time. Just need to hike in a little further and get a little...

For sure. $630 for the tag/license, $500 in gas, and $370 in miscellaneous stuff. I can't wait to go again. If I can find 3 other people, I'd be interested in a drop camp. 4 of the 6 hunters in our area were successful. The 5th should have had been too, but apparently, he screwed it up. It cost...

It is amazing for sure. I took along my DSLR and never used it once. Quite unfortunate. Ohh well.... It just means I have to go back :D I may do a drop camp next time, or I may just go again like we did. I'm thinking about going again in 3-5 years. Now that I have everything I need, it will...

    Carrying a Sidearm while Hunting

I have no idea what model one I have. I've had it for 5 or 6 years now. I remember it being a fairly cheap one. Unfortunately, my red dot won't fit inside the holster. Really, that is the biggest drawback. Make sure you're wearing a sturdy belt or the pistol can try and pull your pants down. I...

Back from my elk hunt in CO

Well, I didn't end up shooting an elk, but @Cleck and I had an awesome time in Colorado. I learned a ton...

    Carrying a Sidearm while Hunting

I carry when hunting. Sometimes I carry a .22 in a drop leg holster. Sometimes I carry my M&P9c in an OWB holster. Other times I carry my .44 mag Super Redhawk in a bandolier holster. It all depends on the season, what I feel like hunting, and my mood at the time. This is all on private land...
