In my opinion it is better to buy an 870 with an extension already installed. Then the transition from magazine to the extension is already deburred and smoothed, there are no mag spring retention plug dimples to deal with and that means no holes in your mag tube. You can still transition between hunting and home defense configurations easily and with no problems.
I bought a 590 with 8+1. Mariner. Worth it.

I like Nordic Comp tubes and springs. Get an extended spring and trim it down as needed. A better low drag follower while you're at it.
It's not uncommon for the extension tube to go past the muzzle 6-10 inches on a 3-gun or sporting shotgun, 12-14 shells in the tube. Your won't damage the tube but you do want the barrel to float free.
