When did you plant the garlic? Mine are turning nice and brown. That’s what you want them to do . It’s an indication that they are almost ready to be harvested and dried. I’ll be cutting and sauté the scapes soon and harvesting mine once they get a little browner.

Glad you guys brought up garlic. Only knowledge I have of garlic is what I read on-line.
Mine is soft neck and I planted it last Fall. I know hard neck is supposed to be better in our zone but the soft neck is all I could find when I decided I was going to give it a try. It seems to be doing well. I don't have a clue when I might pull it. I read about letting it turn brown etc. Also have seen something about braiding the soft necks and hanging for storage. I don't have any idea how I came up with this date but I was figuring around July 20th.
Any advice is appreciated.
On other vegetables, we have been picking yellow beans for a couple of weeks. Two cucumbers came into the house today. We have the cukes climbing crab pot netting. Have a bunch of squash forming, good size tomatoes developing and onions rounding up trough the soil. Potatoes in barrels are looking good as well.
Sooooo someone give me the word on the garlic.

My grape, super sweet, sun sugar and Roma plants all have some little guys growing. So far nothing on the big beef plants. I can’t wait for the first few I get to harvest. So much better than store bought.

we already did the scapes.
planted in fall. Forget when.
Bulbs are not big enough.
dug a few today and ended up transplanting them to the raised bed where there is better soil.

My strawberries are about done. A few little guys left to pick. The birds got all my hoe y berries. Fucking robins. I have to get my migrants out tomorrow to pick a boatload of raspberries. Damn squirrels are starting to eat my peaches. I doubt I’ll see any this year again. If that’s the case I’m cutting it down. I’ve gotten one peach in the last 3 years then all the damn squirrels do is bury the pits and dig up my garden beds. I’m not getting double hit anymore for no reward.

OK, so when do I pull mine?
Please see post 124
Edit: Obviously you grow commercially. Is there a place like a farm stand where your products are sold?

do you think he’s going to divulge that? That would mean us misfits would be close to his almost finished backyard kitchen, entertainment area

Supposedly garlic stops growing after the solstice. That said rule of thumb is when the plant is 60% brown and died back. If you wait too long the cloves start to separate and the bulb “opens up” this is not desirable from a selling standpoint.
Only reason I’m starting now is that I needed something for the men to do, and it’s a time consuming job. I pull mine and cut the roots then weather permitting I like to leave it in the field for a few days so the outside skin dries and shrinks a bit. This way when we load a lot of the excess dirt falls off and the bulbs look better.
My goal is to be done harvesting by July 15-20

Man my garden is behind. Everything is still sprouting, though the tomatoes and lettuce are going strong
It’ll get there. There’s still lots of warm weather ahead. We’ve been eating lettuce for two weeks now. I think I’m turning cottontail.

Shit I’ve been too busy to plant my carrot seeds. Now I have 12,000 pound of crushed stone to move and 8,000 ponds of flag stone to lay. I guess the carrots are waiting.

when I did the same I finally rented a small bucket tractor.

I’ve got two kids that helped me for free. It only took us about an hour to move 3.5/4 yards of stone, take it and roll it out. The other bit is going where my camper is to fill in low spots. Now I have one years left to move and it won’t take long. Honestly it would have taken me nearly as long to rent and pick up the tractor. It would have only been 4-5 buckets full.

Spent an hour or so trimming the “suckers” off my tomato plants and cleaning up the weeds growing in my garden.
Found a few little interesting things
Found a couple of what I’m pretty sure is cucumber plants growing from Last year
And this mutant tomato

Definitely a difference based on soil differences.
Well my tomatoes are making a speedy come back. Some of my pepper plants are starting to make a come back also. We need a few day of sunshine to really see them come back. My onions appear to be a huge flop. I might not harvest them in the fall and see if the keep through the winter. Maybe fill in the dead loss in the spring.
I'm still hoping to add 3 more raised beds by fall. Any good late season crops I could work plant in them?
Also what does everyone do for winter storage? Root cellars? can I put them on my stairs leading out of the basement? The outside is a standard bilco door and the house side has an insulated wall/door.
