Come on, they pound these things out on rocks in dirt-floor shops by Hadji's wearing sandals if any shoes at all and they work...
The Angry Beavers of Century Arms gave American made AK's a bad name with QC issues, (and they were the first really big producers of Kalashnikov Rifles in the US) so with improved technology, machinery, and materials I dare say most of them made here are pretty good for what they are: 7.62 Pez Dispensers.
I had a Century WASR that had been honed and refined: that fucker was 100% reliable with fully acceptable accuracy...too bad NYS though my having it was a threat to the State and it's citizens, so it enjoys retirement in Alabama.

Those WASR’s are really good guns. If you have the 10/63 version (triangle on trunnion) built from the the Romanian md65 military rifle. Cold hammer forged barrel.
Only funky thing about these was the lack of a dimpled receiver. People contributed magazine wobble to this but magazine stabilization actually starts at the bolt rails. “Wasr 10” as in single stack 10 rd magazines in which the receiver opening would only except single stack. Later the magazine opening was widened to allow the 30 magazine when assault weapons ban was lifted. And with CIA at the helm
doing the cutting, This did not help magazine wobble either. They are not really US made..(US assembled)
But still,
With the importer and the assembler being CIA,
it's hit or miss.

The Zastava imports are probably the best option for a traditional AK, domestic AK production quality is a bit spotty.
If price is not a consideration however I of course recommend any of the Galil Ace models. The quality and performance is unequaled among Kalashnikovs and they are represent a fully modernized version of the platform. If cost is no object nothing else equals an Ace.

That is the 7.62x39 version. There are also 5.56 and 7.62x51 models in both carbine and pistol configurations. I have a 7.62x51 carbine and a 5.56 pistol. There are some of my favorite guns.

Ok - not seeing any in the $1500 price range - seem to be $2500+

Post #35 is great advice. But not in that price range. These are now more collector rifles than shooters. Check out Arsenal. Bulgarian imports really top spec stuff. They might run couple of hundred more than $1500 but they definitely retain there value.
