If they can't do it, then they don't get to handle the gun.

That rule works for children, it should work for hollywood too.

Well...most actors are just adult pretenders that peddle make-believe while they read other people's creative writing for a living. Those at the top of their profession have sycophantic entourages that isolate them from reality.

I'm not suggesting the actors load or prepare anything.

Just that they personally verify that it was done correctly.

If I were an actor, I would certainly be inspecting any firearm I was handed and told was unloaded, or loaded with blanks to confirm.

If you were handed a gun on a movie set, and the script called for you to point it at someone and pull the trigger, would you just trust the guy who handed it to you ?

You would have to personally load each mag to confirm this.

Your last question: yes. I’m confident this is exactly how movie sets function, and there hasn’t been a fatality on one since last century AFAIK.

With previous AD's seems like someone may get criminally charged. And AB is going to get sued into oblivion in civil court.

Simple solution/wish list. Legislation should be passed to never allow real guns capable of firing ammunition will not be allowed on a movie or TV production set. Nonfiring replica guns are to be used where guns are shown but not fired and Air soft is to be used when they are fired. Post production will add the bang bang and pew pew. Further, actors will not be allowed to touch a pistol without a pistol permit and can't get one unless they are a state resident and go through the permitting process. All actors who touch a gun will be required to go through a background check and a safety training before every day of shooting that involves handling a fire arm, replica or airsoft gun or ammunition (real, blank, spent or parts). All shows that are filmed in NYS will only be allowed to use guns that regular citizens can own and must be modeled in a NY compliant configuration. All scenes will be regulated with an accurate firing count on all weapons and reloads must occur and be shown when NY mandated magazine maximum loadings have been exhausted (ie: a lot less time will be spent firing and a lot more time will be spent reloading). All scenes where someone is shot or killed will show realistic wounds, deaths and subsequent actions by the actors will demonstrate actual levels of pain, physical capability/incapacity, healing times and permanent results of GSW injuries. Other weapons such as knives, bricks, asps, pipes, screw drivers, bottles, rocks, cars, trucks, baseball bats, etc. must be used in scenes along with or instead of guns with wounds and deaths by such weapons represented in the same percentage in a show or movie as is seen in real life (no over representation of gun privilege, the true diversity of weapon use for wounding, homicide and murder must be displayed). No suppressor may be used without showing the background check and purchase of applicable fees, submission of paperwork and appropriate wait times. Likewise, no gun of any type may be shown in a purchase (at a store or at a gun show) without a background check performed with the average state wide wait time used and no pistol may be shown in a purchase without a pistol permit being produced. All internet gun purchases must show shipment to an FFL and the accompanying transfer fees being paid and background checks being performed. All ammo purchases must take place at brick and mortar stores with the average drive time to get there and back portrayed and must be limited to average actual store quantities statewide and sales limits currently imposed due to shortages. All guns in vehicles will be stored out of the drivers reach, unloaded with a gun lock in place and all ammo will be shown stored in a separate container with a lock. Etc., etc., etc. just like we real people are subject to every day in New Yorkistan.

By the way, when have you ever seen a gun (AR-9/AR-10/AR-15 or other semi auto) on TV or in a movie with a NY compliant configuration?

You could check first round in the mag (and the barrel for obstructions) easily enough. The odds of having a mixed blank/live round magazine are far lower than just having one with the wrong ammo.

In this case it was a wheel gun, checking that should be second nature.

Given how few people are actually in movies getting shot at compared to the general public, you are at a far higher chance of killing someone because of a negligent prop master than you are of catching covid from an unvaccinated acquaintance. We know your concern about the latter.

I would absolutely check, and I wouldn't feel safe around anyone who wouldn't.

I think the most telling thing about this whole situation is the absolutely stunning level of hypocrisy. Hollywood elitist liberals are the loudest and most strident voices braying for gun control, and yet nearly every single one of them acts in movie after movie that are completely based on staggering levels of gunfire - typically with firearms that seem to never run out of ammunition. They hate the idea of normal citizens being able to carry guns to defend themselves and shoot recreationally, but have no compunction about making movies where people are murdered with zero sympathy, empathy - and typically sociopathic levels of viciousness. They are happy to portray killers completely lacking remorse or decency (both the "good" and "bad" guys) but are the first to decry real life violence and hatred and cry for compassion, equality, and tolerance. I've watched and enjoyed my fair share of shoot 'em up movies - you bet your ass I'm going to see the new Bond flick, but I'm losing enthusiasm for seeing that more and more. I'd rather watch sports or wildlife documentaries anymore rather than see my fellow humans glorifying in new and horrific ways of slaughtering each other.
Since Baldwin was gleefully portraying what he professes to hate so much in real life - I hope he has nightmares until the day he dies.

What I don't understand about this whole thing, is WTF are they doing with *any* live ammo *anywhere near* the movie set ?

There is absolutely nothing in a movie that requires the gun to actually fire a projectile.

I agree, and the fact that props cant shoot live ammo Leaves me wondering if being handed a loaded prop gun by prop guy is true. The story is not very plausible.

The B-camera operator was on a dolly with a monitor, checking out the potential shots. Hutchins was also looking at the monitor from over the operator’s shoulder, as was the movie’s director, Joel Souza, who was crouching just behind her.

Baldwin removed the gun from its holster once without incident, but the second time he repeated the action, ammunition flew toward the trio around the monitor. The projectile whizzed by the camera operator but penetrated Hutchins near her shoulder, then continued through to Souza. Hutchins immediately fell to the ground as crew members applied pressure to her wound in an attempt to stop the bleeding.

October 22, 10 p.m.: The AP reported that court records indicate that Baldwin was told before the fatal incident that the gun had no ammunition. The film’s armorer, a term for the person in charge of gun props, was Hannah Gutierrez Reed. Per the court records, she set three guns on a cart outside of the area where the scene was being acted. According to a search warrant application obtained by the AP, assistant director Dave Halls then brought one of the guns to Baldwin, not knowing that it was loaded with live rounds. A search warrant filed in a Santa Fe court noted that an assistant director said that the weapon was a “cold gun.” Hutchins, Souza, and a B-camera operator were still nearby assessing shots, the Los Angeles Times reported, when Baldwin pulled the gun out of a holster twice in preparation for the scene. The second time he removed the gun, ammunition reportedly flew toward the trio, penetrating Hutchins near her shoulder and continuing through to Souza.

Productions spokesperson said the incident involved “the misfire of a prop gun with blanks,” the information has not been confirmed by investigators.

After IATSE Local 44, a prop workers’ union based in Los Angeles, claimed the gun had a “live round,” the Sheriff’s Office disputed that claim to Deadline. “We haven’t even begun the forensics on that issue,” a spokesperson said. “That hasn’t been determined by us as of yet.”

Sounds like holly wood is spinning the story

The Los Angeles Times reported that there had been existing concerns about gun safety protocols on the Rust set. Crew members told the Times that on October 16, Baldwin’s stunt double accidentally fired two rounds from a gun after being told it had no ammunition.

Stunt double of course!!, Sure thats the ticket, it was my stunt double yeah yeah thats it and then he ran off with my wife Morgan Fairchild, whom Ive seen naked.

He aimed that gun at the crew because of one of two things, A) he was horsing around, or B) he was in a typical rage as he is known for.

One of the best "real life movie suggestions " i have ever heard. One problem....

In real life this movie would have long stretches of waiting for some action, albeit limited true action and be around 47 hours long.....edited down.

Funny how real life would be to a liberal so arduous, time intensive, intrusive and burdensome.....they may not enjoy it ( of course)

I admittedly know nothing about how hollywood prop guns. I have always been under the assumption that the close up guns were actual firearms firing blanks, sometimes modified. Every now and then on really crappy 80's action flicks one can see a integral barrel blank firing adapter so a AR/M16 would cycle with blanks. On a SA revolver a BFA of course is not necessary.
I completely get how weird accidents happen like the Brandon Lee shooting, but the current reporting is they were using live rounds for some shots, and this had happened twice already? How the fuck would that ever be seen as a good idea? Why would live rounds even be on site for any reason?

Tributes to woman accidentally 'shot' by Alec as armorer deletes social media

THE armorer who handled the gun before the accidental fatal shooting has shut down her social media accounts, and sources say she did so based on legal advice. Director of photography Halyna Hutchi…

The gun —reportedly a vintage Colt pistol— was being used by crew members off set during a "target practice" with real bullets, multiple sources told TMZ.

So....NOT a "prop gun," but rather a real gun used as a prop.

Inexcusable.
