Starting to mull over parts for an AR-10 I would like to put together this winter. I want to construct both upper and lower and thought I would get the lower out of the way first seeing how I have to go through an FFL. Thinking Aero-Precision. I am largely ignorant on this stuff and freely admit it, so if you have suggestions and or comments along the way that proves my ignorance, no problem. What say ye on Aero goods? Alternatives?

There are a lot of good 308 sets out there. The trick is to get the same standard or pattern for the upper, lower and hand guard. After that making sure the barrel and bolt Are the same pattern. Then making sure the gas tube and barrel are the same length. Then buffer tube, buffer spring and buffer are compatible and you are all set.

There are three competing patterns Armalite, DPMS and DPMS Gen II. On top of that there are several different rail heights for the upper/ hand guard configuration.

So if you are interested in the AR 308 (AR10 is Armalite and the purists will curse you for confusing the two terms) make sure to stick with one pattern for everything and you will be good.

You basically have 2 choices in patterns so you have to stick with one. Armalite is the original but DPMS2 seems to be the more popular these days. Aero/Ballistic Advantage and Odin all make good stuff at reasonable prices. You can often find a deal on a matched set.

Be aware that Aero makes two version of upper, the M5 and the M5E1. Both use the DPMS pattern (vs the Armalite pattern) but the E1 has an integrated barrel nut. That will restrict your choice of handguards.

I've got the M5 upper but it's still in the box. I'll update if I get around to building it before you do.

I think you still need to buy a full rifle to get a DPMS Gen II lower. That format is proprietary with the primary advantages of being smaller, lighter, and having compatibility with a fair number of AR-15 parts. The AR-15 compatibility is a great idea but they refuse to sell stripped lowers so that people can build out themselves. Instead, one has to buy a complete Gen II rifle and then change out parts. Utter stupidity... stay away from DPMS Gen II stuff - unless you're okay with buying complete.

dsdmmat's steps are excellent advice. I would add, make a full parts list first and do the research to make sure the parts are compatible. Buy after that is done. If you buy first, you may get pigeon-holed into, say, a handguard that isn't your first choice.

Thank you fellows, damn, I didn't know Some things that I didn't know I didn't know.
Along with this project, I hope to finish a long time project, a French fowler with about a mile of wire inlay and a thousand inlays, along with a Bucks county style smooth rifle, one of the sleekest and most pleasing to my eye.
Lots to chew on here, but if I understand it correctly the AR 308 (?) is the pattern I will follow.
Anyone here ever try the 80% Arms GOYABEAN posted? Hey, I gotta follow up on everything.

Just make sure to get their Jig with it. Some receivers and jigs don’t work together.

I have built both the Armalite and DPMS pattern guns there is a lot of differences in the receivers but they both work the same. Had I known the differences in the two before I started I wouldn’t have built both patterns. I like to be able to stock only one type of spares.

I went with PSA. I did it because I was lazy and I could get everything from one manufacture so I know it would fit.

Shoots fine, most likely shoots better than I me.

Geeze GOYABEEN, Since your posting I have been absorbing as much as I can on the subject. Not trying to get around anything, but I do enjoy making as much as I can with my own two hands, which has its own benefits beyond needing an FFL.

Having the right tools and your willing knowledge you don't need a FFL there's a video of a guy using that jig but he incorporated a plastic tub I believe some type of lubricant and a little pump when milling it gets cooled with fluid
