On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor ruled that the federal government can no longer require the registration of suppressors, short-barreled rifles (SBRs), short-barreled shotguns (SBSs), and certain other firearms whose $200 transfer tax was eliminated under the One Big Beautiful Bill.

When congress passed the 1BBB with the class 3 tax cuts, this is what they intended. They stopped short of eliminating the registry portion because they needed Democrat support to pass the bill. This was their intent all along, and piece by piece it's getting done. This piece is small, but important nonetheless. The real tell will come in a week or less which is how long the DOJ has to respond. Right now, the decision is stayed pending DOJ response - either appeal the decision or accept it. We'll see. It will eventually wind up in front of SCOTUS unless congress changes the law.

It's a court ruling not a law with a sunset. The only thing that could make it more permanent would be if the DOJ had appealed it and SCOTUS ruled.

The catch here is that some states that don't prohibit these items require them to be federally registered in state law.

So that makes a very interesting gray zone.

Does not affect state requirements, so still no-go in NY for instance.

This will take a long time to shake out. However, there is a case in Missouri that is related and likely will blow this ruling wide open. Sorry, I can't remember the name of that case at the moment. Brown perhaps ? Don't know. Having a senior moment.

Anyways, this ruling has so many unforseen intricacies that getting them all sorted will take quite a while. But it's a fantastic start !

Well, they paid for the fight, so they deserve some compensation.

Any other manufacturers were free to sign on if they'd wanted.

It also applies to GOA members, who can buy any brand unencumbered.

AFAIK that is not limited to existing GOA members, so anyone who wants to can sign up tomorrow and buy any brand they want without the bullshit.
