Ithaca M87...thought I'd sell; nope.

[MuttCat]

I bought an Ithaca 12 ga back around 1989 or so. It is basically a M37 renamed the M87 by the company's new owners at that time. Real nice, all steel, walnut, and it pretty much stayed in the back of the truck and got crapped up.

I tore it down eventually and did it over. Sent the receiver and field barrel out for a quality refinishing. I did the stock and replaced the "dipped in plastic" finish with oil. Beautiful, nicer than oem.

All the choke tubes. Sling mounts, bought a Hastings rifled slug barrrel...never used, still. Long eye relief bushnell...nothing fancy but works great with the cantilever mounting. Also got a turkey tube come to think of it.

So its been on the wall for decades now, and I got thinking I'd sell it. Went online, discovered the latest on Ithaca and the story behind the M87 and the slug barrel, and more I read up the less I wanted to part with it. After farting around for a couple of weeks I can't bring myself to part with.

It's highly likely I'll never use it again, health issues part of the problem, but geez the value of all the stuff...I'd never get it back.

Ever been in the same boat?

I have come to live by this saying, “Resale value is a problem for my Heirs.”

Ithaca has a history of owner rotation, which seems to be universal with firearms manufacturers. They still make high end products, but apparently the production of mainstream shotguns has taken a back seat. Prices look like they're coming up.

A friend suggested the slug barrel would be a tough sell as much of ny is no longer shotgun only. I don't know, I think an accurate slug gun is still viable anywhere. A used Hasting for the Ithaca is listed on Ebay for $500. don't know about that, but the barrel is now rare.

Yeah, but no heirs to pass on to. The wife would just sell all.

"Ever been in the same boat?"
Yes, unfortunately the boat went down and all weapons were lost.
@dsd has it right.

Sell it while your alive, cause your gonna wind up rolling in your grave crying when you find out how much your significant other sells it for.

[MuttCat]

I'm certainly gonna de-virgin that slug barrel!

Or who she sells it to.

"They had one of those give aways, so I took all the guns down. Look at all the Starbucks gift cards I got".

@MuttCat, I can probably stop by this weekend sometime and pick it up...

[Beerman]

Only buy. Never sell.

Ithicas were top notch guns back in the day, rugged and dependable. Sorry when the called it quits.

After reading the post I recalled that when Ithaca started back up some twenty or more years back, the "new" 37's they were making came with a dealer wholesale price of $750. which I thought was outrageous considering Dealer on a Browning BPS, or Remington Wingmaster...
Gunchoker puts them from $400 ~ $600

Ithaca made quality firearms. The M87 is all steel and walnut and excellent fit and finish. The receiver is engraved...I wouldn't say in a fancy way. John Browning. And I believe prices are coming up. Condition of course is the biggest part of what somebody would pay.
