This will become more common. They will use EVs as their excuse for it, but it will result in more taxes collected.
Here is the article about it. In some ways it makes some sense because the more you use it the more wear and tear you create. However, will this be applied fairly?
For me I drive so little I will pay less.

You think they will abolish the fuel tax at the pump... Hell no .... This will be an additional tax you will pay ... If you want more revenue right now they could just increase the tax at the pump .

that would be political suicide. And remember, taxes NEVER go down, if the road use tax goes into effect, the gas tax will remain. This is a money grab. If the state government were to reduce spending on freak'n illegals we'll all be better off
This tax is already in effect for commercial vehicles. It's called road use tax. Back in 2010 the average commercial vehicle paid around $1,000 a month in road use tax. This did not include the regular fuel tax you pay at the pump. It's more now, just not sure how much.

I did say it’s a way to create more revenue. I never said or thought for one second they would get rid of the fuel or gas tax.
The issue is as more and more EVs get on the road they are losing huge chunks of revenue devoted to taking care of the road. I’d assume there are already taxes on the electric they are using for their EVs, but that doesn’t go to road repairs.
These funds often fat raised for other things. So we or they will be taxed multiple times. There will be a fuel tax on gas, electric, and diesel, there will be tolls still, and now a mileage tax. Most people will forget about the other taxes already laid. If you read the article they claim after educating people most people supported it. It’s a done deal.
I had taken a survey about the natural gas to electric transition and they tried to educate me on how it would work, but it didn’t work. I’d assume most people aren’t like me because when I kept saying well no wait a minute how could that be or this would still happen the person administrating the survey got audibly pissed off. I could hear the tone in her voice change when I kept saying well no prices will have to go up because the increased invest mention the infrastructure to deliver more electric. When she asked about the jobs created I said they’d be temporary at best. She then tried to direct me not to comment back outside of if I agreed or disagreed. I said obviously I disagree strongly. I surely kissed her off. Stupid people will fall for these tricks.

This is actually one tax that's justified (but double dipping with this and fuel isn't).
Roads are actually a legitimate service provided by government. How to fairly charge for that use is a hard problem.
The "most fair" way would be for every road to be a toll road. Modern cars are actually capable of that. But I dont think we want to go there.
The fuel use as a proxy for road use wasn't a terrible work around when every vehicle used fuel. But, that's failing now.
Let's start by auditing all the tax money declared for "road repair" to see where it is all going. It sure as hell doesn't seem to be going to road repair.
Between the potholes and some asshole's idea of a road surface being "loose stone and oil" (wanna kill motorcyclists much?) they obviously aren't utilizing all the tax money for its intended purpose.
