Your gun is used to disable a threat, not to intimidate like a retard. When you're ready to kill someone, that's when you're ready to pull out the gun and fire at the threat. When your life is in imminent danger that's what the gun is designed for to combat. The first round that hits them can be much more intimidating anyways. Don't be that moron, if they don't think your gun is real, let them make the mistake themselves.

You are not legally authorized to draw much less fire until you are in imminent fear for your life (or someone elses life, etc...).
Basically, if you think you've got time for a warning shot you shouldn't even draw.

Everyone's logic here is sound, for NYS. I am not an expert on every states laws on the matter. There maybe a state where warning shots are ok or warning by pointing your firearms is ok. Personally I would rather make someone think twice, than take a life. But without doubt I would snatch that life if forced to without warning.

It's to late at that point, I am not longer warning I taking. If I am forced to shot, they are dead. I am not sending 1 round, I am sending all of them.

The legal defense after doing a mag dump on a BG incapacitated on the ground by the 2nd or 3rd shot will be difficult.
A bit off topic but I heard a story awhile ago at a local range. I used to belong to 2 ranges just to hang out with gun people.
Now I just invite people to my range.
A guy told us that one night his troubled 20 year old daughter had a few people hanging out in her basement bedroom. He heard a ruckus so he went downstairs. There was an 18 year old boy "flipping out" on pills and that fake weed stuff. The kid was spinning and screaming, pulling his cloths off and threatening everyone. The guy said he calmed the kid down and took him upstairs. The guy then said he sat the kid down and sat across from him. The guy then took out his 1911 45cal, put it on his lap and told the kid to never, ever come to this house again.
Another story.........
When I took my pistol permit course the NRA instructor gave some interesting opinions.......to new CC students.
"If some thug fucks with my wife while we are walking down the street in Buffalo, ill kill them dead."
Also.....
"I dont need a threat to my life, ill shoot if you threaten my safety."
Even though I had read the laws, including NYS article 35, these stories convinced me to research NYS law and some case law in greater depth.
Even though I knew it already, I learned these 2 guys are complete idiots.
Now I just invite people to my range.

I am not talking about shooting people as they lay on the ground incapacitated. I was trying to make a point. The point is if I have to pull the trigger it's to late to descalate the situation or make them rethink their actions.

There are several cases where you are legally allowed to use deadly force, but you may not want to get involved anyway. Even a perfectly justified use of deadly force is likely to be very expensive and a major pain in the ass, possibly a life changing one.
Basically, even if you think you are legally covered, you may not want to if you have any other option.
Your thinking is a little skewed... You are absolutely, with extreme prejudice, wanting to end a "threat" to your life by using "deadly" force! That means you intend to "kill", period! If you think sending one down the pipe at your target, stopping to look, wait and see if it caused the desired result, is going to work out well for you... You are in for a big surprise!
That's TV shit, right along with shooting the gun out of the attackers hand, or why didn't you shoot the attacker in the leg to stop him/her? If you "ever", heaven forbid, need to draw your weapon, you are deploying it to end a threat, and you shoot, and "keep" shooting until that threat is removed, period! Direct frontal assault, target turned, target falls, target whatever, you keep your firearm training on target and keep shooting, reload, shoot, shoot, shoot, until it is no longer a threat!
There's a mental preparation, and expectation of a course of action that should be imprinted in your mind if you are a person who carries a firearm. It shouldn't be playing paddycake or pussyfooting around, it shouldn't be worrying about the after affects other than that you'll be breathing tomorrow and the BG won't be. It should be about survival and animal instinct to "WIN" at any cost... Using a firearm is just a tool, but your "MINDSET" is what will win the day for you. This scenario should be played out in your head every time you holster that firearm, go to the range, training, etc.!
By programming your mind to think shoot once, or if I shoot the person on the ground it's a problem will and can cause you to hesitate, which will be problematic I can assure you. Once a firearm is drawn, is go time! No warning shot, no one and let's see, no thinking I just wanna scare someone!

Wait, wait, wait, for making a long story short kinda thing, I left out our thoughts on his demeanor and more of what he said, like, "I thought I might have to shoot the kid" and "Im too old to fight, if he came at me id shoot him."
Also, these guys are "clean you shotgun" kind of guys but every single one of them thought the guy was serious and they were considering discontinuing his membership. This was light years from the cleaning your gun joke.
My Father taught me to fire the 1st warning shot into the center of the chest. That should give them plenty of warning that you mean business.
