The thing about guns, new guns....

There is no real innovation in firearms, hasn't been for decades. Everything is the same as the last thing, just newer designs of the same thing.

We've discussed this before. We are on a technological plateau, not to mention tge market isn't often welcoming of actual innovation to begin with. There will have to be a technological paradigm shift, some heretofore unknown technology or technique that blows current design norms away. And when that happens gun buyers of that time will be complaining about how everytime they buy a new gun in 3 months it's rendered completely obsolete. Being on a plateau isn't necessarily a bad thing. It gives us tge opportunity to zero in on the precise iteration of our ideal gun and buy it with confidence it will remain a viable option for decades to come. For example I really like my M&P Carry Comp but it's not offering anything new to the market. Nevertheless I get to enjoy the notion that it represents a gun fully optimized to my desires and will reamin so likely for the rest of it's service life.
As I've said before optics, illumination, night vision, thermals and their means of integration with small arms are where most of the innovation takes place. Consider this, you can get a compact size pistol light with 1,000 lumens over 22,000, candela which is a tremendous amount of output for such a small light, closed emitter red dots are becoming the norm and are decreasing in bulk to the point they are no encumbrance to a CCW (The Holsun EPS is an amazing optic)
I am now carrying, comfortably and well concealed in IWB a compact but fighting sized handgun with a light output about on par with automotive high beams together with a compact fully enclosed red dot. A rig that tells darkness to fuck right off. This is a level of capability that even just 10 years ago was unheard and 20 years ago wasn't even imagined. And these are the areas that are going to keep improving at an exponential rate.
20 years from now we might have housingless, holographicly projected sights with augmented reality features with integrated low light or no light capability running on a weapon integrated power supply. Things like real time trajectory predictions with real time lead/hold indicators, integrated status readout for ammo, target info, ambient condition info, overlaid targeting reticles on targets out of line of sight based on networked information from other teammates.
Further advancements in miniaturization, battery capacity, power draw efficiency will make these types of technologies possible on something as small as a CC pistol. By then we might have just progressed to Ghost in the Shell cyber brains that any tool or daily item gets plugged into.
The next big paradigm shift will probably be small arms scale rail/coil guns but that will take massive advancements in power supply and management. That would ve nice though, we'd all be 3d printing our own projectiles tailored to our own specifications. With that much power available in such a small package might make small arms directed energy weapons a reality. I doubt will will see either of these in our lifetimes though, not in a practical form. You CAN get a coil rifle but the energy levels in kinetic terms means it's pretty much a toy. A very cool toy to be sure.

Kind of like aviation, since the wright brothers it has been thrust and lift. We need something game changing like anti gravity, but then I have been informed that gravity doesn't exist so there is that.
I thought by now a personalized ray gun would be available, but truthfully i still like big booms and a cloud of smoke, though I have heard that they make a powder that is smokeless and flints are no longer required to make booms. Probably a good thing I'm old.

The innovation is not in firing projectiles, it’s in fighting systems. Think about the electronics being added to handguns, rifles, and even hearing protection, and there’s your innovation. No one knows how to make anything with their hands and a milling machine using a brand new idea, but add a few computer chips and some cheap labor and BOOM! Innovation. I’m lookin’ at you, red dot sight.

Not a new gun but a surprising one, to me at least:

A slightly re-vamped version of S&W's obscure single action carry gun, the CSX-E.
I'm suprised to see this since supposedly the gun media killed this poor thing over the way the trigger resets.
Apparently it was enough of a cult classic to warrant this refresh, that or S&W is being stubborn. I'd consider purchasing a full size version as a range toy actually but I don't think I'd bother with the carry version............ but maybe I could possibly see getting the 3.6" one for curiosities sake.

What I have noticed is many companies are improving components, which is way overdue.
This sort of started with Canik and their stock Warren sights....either fiber optic front and rear, or blacked out rear. And their far superior trigger over most makers. The lightening cuts, fluted barrel, ergonomic grips....all stock and all far less expensive than other comparable brands.
Now I'm seeing other companies adding better triggers, metal sights and other options stock.
Other than that, most companies are just offering color schemes and slight ergonomic changes.

One example, for decades, the smooth barrel was the only kind of barrel, through innovation, someone decided, through innovation that this was not the best option for a rifle.

People like Eli Whitney came up with a brilliant idea of interchangeable gun parts.

In 1836, Samuel Colt received a U.S. patent for a handheld pistol that featured a multi-firing system based on a rotating barrel with multiple chambers that could fire bullets through a lock and spring design. This was serious innovation.

Soon, a swing out revolver for easier reloads.

Shotguns, one day, a guy said... "Holy shit, we should add a second barrel to a shotgun" (He really did not say that.) This is innovation.

The Spencer Repeating Rifle Company patented a design at the start of the Civil War that was capable of repeated firing following a single ammunition load. More winning, more innovation.

Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1883 created a version of the rifle that incorporated a pump action. More innovation.

Soon, the full auto gun was created.

This is real innovation: Hirem Maxim, an American-born British inventor, would take the machine gun to the next level with his Maxim gun. The weapon harnessed the recoil energy from each bullet fired to eject a used cartridge and pull in the next one.

1918 of the lightweight Thompson submachine gun, also known as the Tommy gun, would offer a hand-held version of the deadly machine gun as one of the first portable and fully automatic firearms.

Mikhail Kalashnikov for the Soviet military in 1947. The short-barreled weapon with steep front-sight posts and curved magazines offered the rapid-fire of machine guns with lighter-weight portability.

When I hear about innovation, this is what I am talking about.

I want smarter guys than me to some up with something, wicked new. Something never seen before.

You can thank the ATF and the NFA, 1968 GCA, and 1986 closure of machine gun registry all for Stifling firearms development. Slide fire stocks, FRT triggers and pistol braces are all innovations that the ATF has done their darndest to stifle. How much more innovation would would have in the firearms world if there never had been any of the aforementioned gun control laws? How much more innovation would there be in regards to machine guns if there was none of the aforementioned gun control laws?

Came across this today. Modern stocks with a mix of old blue and hardwood.
I have a like new Remington 870 express that I've really never liked, but this would certainly give it a whole new look.
