Hopefully it won't matter if Thune gets off his ass and the Senate passes House Resolution H.R. 1181 "Protecting Privacy in Purchases Act" which passed in the House 221 to 201.

HR 1181 PROHIBITS credit card companies and payment networks from assigning firearm-specific Merchant Category Codes (MCC 5723) to gun and ammo purchases.

Since 2022, Visa, Mastercard, and American Express have categorized gun store transactions under a special code.

Not that they should even track that, but what you're saying is accurate. It just stays you bought something from someone who is a firearms dealer or a seller of ammo.

It doesn't give them authority to say you cannot buy it. They might be able at to marry up the social media accounts your submitted and look to see if after a large purchase you post some sort of crazy manifesto, though.

However, the solution to that is simple:

1. Before you submit your social media accounts for the permit, change your username on your accounts to bullshit
2. Delete all context of said accounts via API calls to the service backend.
3. Right after the signed papers go in, just make a new account using the original name. So you can use the name you've always been using.
4. If you want you might be able to backup the posts you made before your scrubbed things.

The permit paperwork just says you need to give them your social media accounts, former and CURRENT. Once your submit your paperwork, it doesn't require you tell them about new accounts you make. It doesn't mention what condition they have to be in.

That way when they look up the accounts they get a wall of nothing. (You're just not a very vocal guy.)

So beat them at their own game.

I don't use Facebook, Twitter, etc. This site is as close as I get to social media. I don't find any value in creating a history of where I am and with who, what im doing, etc. If anything its a liability. It provides zero functional value. If you are important to me, you'll already know what I'm doing because you'll be there doing those things with me. I don't need to share it with you... you were there.

Think of it this way, if Facebook existed 200 years ago, would you really give a shit what your great great great great grandfather ate for lunch in July 1826? No? Me either.

Other than that there is also my general motto of "Any information that can be used WILL be misused". So I just choose not to give them that type of data to begin with. Can't use or lose what you don't have.

I buy all my guns in PA. Its a
little more of a pain in the butt for pistols, but I have a guy. I can still choose, buy, and be home with a pistol in about an hour. I usually wait until the next day as to not piss off "my guy" too much.
But if I really NEED a handgun, I can probably do it in 45 minutes.
If I call my NY guy to meet me at the PA gun shop, then pay for the gun, then leave my guy there to do his thing, I can drive to the court house, add the pistol, then get back to my NY guys shop where he will already be. Yep, about 45 minutes.
My NY guy and me both live 5 miles from the shop. The court house is about 10 miles from the shop. It would be close.
Dammit! Now I have to try it!!

I just walk into store, pick out gun, pay, and walk out with it. No permit required either. Go ahead and hate on me, I don't mind.
