Yeah but still, where does that leave you? NYSP are going to enforce this whether your county sheriff backs it or not. Is that letter stating that the sheriff's dept will stand inbetween you and NYSP, so don't re-cert? Or is it just a notice stating that the sheriff's office isn't going to be a party to the safe act?

He's not saying don't re-cert, just saying he will not take part in chasing down non-compliant gun owners.
Zurlo has always been very pro 2a and anti Safe. He has done a lot to streamline the permit process in the county.

The NYSP has maintained a centralized database of PL holders for as long as I can remember. When you add or delete a handgun registered on your PL; the county sheriff's or clerks office electronically notifies the NYSP of the transaction. Also, any handgun personally owned by a police officer/ exempt peace officer--that is listed with his/her employer--is also in the NYSP central firearms registry.

Which is for PP amendments. Does this indicate that from the point of recertification, that all amendments will be entered into a NYSP database?

Yes, What you have stated has been done for years on end. The NYSP does maintain a central firearms registry of pistol license holders along with a description of the handguns registered on your permit. When you add or delete a pistol on your PL; the sheriff's or county clerk's office electronically notifies the NYSP of the transaction.

The recertification process attempts to clean up a "dirty" dormant database with current up-to-date information.

Does the "re-certification" include the NYSP completing a new NICS check on each PP holder? Is that the point, to catch people who are no longer eligible - or is the point to make a new database that they have control over?

To clean up the existing database with up-to-date information on current PL holders. NYC, Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk County are exempt from the state re-certification procedures since they have their own renewal process in place. There are many, perhaps thousands, of licensed PL holders who are deceased or moved out of the original county of issuance without notifying the authorities of the address change.

Since those of us with a PP have already signed up for a "rigged" game, we're left with few choices short of losing our "right" or facing off against a no-knock warrant to confiscate ALL of our stuff. With the present state of this country, that stuff may be needed sooner rather than later.

We've been fucked from the start when we applied for a PP. I didn't even think of the constitutional and personal implications of what I was getting into those 4+ decades ago.

If they wanted me to recertify once a year, I would do so begrudgingly in order to maintain my ability to legally defend myself when out and about with my family when and where it counts. I only have 14 years left before I can leave. A stupid paper isn't going to stop that.

Fruitless victories will do nothing for me if I have no gun to defend myself and family.

Don't know why some pistol licensees make a "big deal" out of it on these boards. If you live in NYC; about the only pistol license the average citizen will get from NYPD is a premises only license. And for that privilege it will cost $340 every three years!! Can't transport the handgun unless it is in a locked container with the pistol unloaded and only to a range located in NYC. To re-certify with the NYSP costs nothing! To renew with Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester Counties costs a fee.

I would love to tell them to go fuck themselves and not do it. That being said, I am going to wait a while just in case it goes to the SCOTUS and gets tossed, but likely even then, this part will remain. Then, I will just comply. I have kept my nose clean and maintained my permit since the mid 90s, and am not about to throw it and my handguns out now. I have no desire to lose the passed down handgun that belonged to my step grandfather, nor the one bought for me by my wife. The alternative to recertifying is move. Can't do that so that's it. It is what it is and it sucks.
Also, I did receive the letter recently as well. Not sure what order those are being sent out.

The same thing was said about the (un)SAFE ACT.. one of the first gun club meetings after its passage in the middle of the night, so many members had no idea what it really entailed. There is STILL confusion (even on this board) about what it and what isn't allowed. Some (most?) of that blame lies on the poorly written law itself.

I have an uncle whose pistol permit was issued in either the late 50s or early 60s... he doesn't even have Internet. (shocking, I know)

Exactly why this will all be revamped and tweaked many times..think of the people off grid, or the real patriots from old school Counties that will be furious and write letters to officials and the mass exodus that could come from this. I'll wait and wait and wait and at the final hours of a solid system and real things in place, and if it means I'll lose everything FOR REAL if I don't sign the papers, then I will. But as of now, no fucking way, whatever @Willjr75 wants to say about me lol, I know this is a broken attempt at gathering information on us all more then that is already gathered,to be able to add the new firearms figures in their democrat/liberal CNN news statistics. As for the cleanup records idea, they know what you have, any information on you when you vote,when you buy a new pistol and when you sold a pistol. No real reason to take away Lifetime licenses from Counties that choose to give those, and if not any other state (whatever,maybe CA or whoever) is doing this so that "clean records" idea can go out the window too. I'm not going to get in to the discussion on how or why to recertify. I just wanted to pass on some helpful information. I received my letter at the place of residence where I initial got my PP. I lucked out and this is my parents address so they just gave me the letter. I have changed my address twice since then, both times changing it with the county. So it appears that the new addresses haven't been forwarded to the state. My guess there's probably going to be a lot of people that wont receive renewal letter because of address changes.
