Google and Facebook have now made it possible to find photos of firearms by simply typing a serial number into the search box. Earlier today, the automotive website Jalopnik published a story showing how license plate numbers are evidently scanned using optical character recognition (OCC) on Google images, allowing them to be searchable using text queries. Using the OCC hypothesis, TFB wondered if this image data mining technique might be able to be used to search for firearm serial numbers. Using images posted previously on TFB with serial numbers displayed on firearms, we tested the serial number search technique. As you can see from the results below, firearm serial numbers are in fact part of this apparent large-scale data mining operation by companies like Google and Facebook.

NOTICE: Facebook And Google Indexing Your Firearm Serial Numbers

Google and Facebook have now made it possible to find photos of firearms by simply searching for a serial number. A story today showed that photos of cars could be found by searching for license plate numbers. It appears the same is now also true of firearm serial numbers.

Google and facebook are indexing every number or word posted in a photo. This isn't firearm specific. I am not sure why someone would put that information out there anyways

People are going to be flabbergasted in a few years when they realize that every image online is stored, and every image has been curated by machine learning, to draw lines between pictures, locations, people, timelines, activities, etc. in ways they never imagined. The very way we write on something as seemingly anonymous a a message forum leaves a distinct signature even.

Should be no surprise to anyone. ANYTHING/EVERYTHING you post online is being cataloged. I'm pretty sure that when the .gov needs help putting someone's life, etc. together, that they go to FB/Google and run facial recognition. They can build a complete life line on some of the morons who seem to have the need to FB EVERY event in their pathetic life, including taking a shit.

NOTHING that is said, or posted on the internet is private, AND it is out there for all to see FOREVER!!

Not a FB'er, so can't speak for them. I ran ALL my SN's in a Google search, and came up empty. One in particular came back with -0- results, the rest were varied, but saw a lot of Trains! I don't care who knows my SN's. Worthless without the firearm. Apply it to a Ghost Gun, and I'll come back a winner since it (original) is still in my possession!
I was Active Duty. My SSN, DNA, Blood type, etc. has been recorded for over 40 years. Not concerned.
