My son is with the building engineers in the city. He worked an office building in midtown for over 15 yrs. He was very happy there, had good seniority. He ran as soon as he could after covid restrictions emptied the building, at first it was great, he his crew had to be there but the building was almost empty, easy work. After things "opened back up" and nobody came back he saw the writing on the wall. Last summer he took a job by the U.N. building owned by Unicef. Said no way he was staying where he was because they already knew they were gonna turn the building into what would be a welfare hotel.

Yeah, such an easy thing to do. Completely build out hundreds of dwellings that all need water & sewer lines, permanent walls and heavy locking doors. Then you have to double the electrical load since offices generally only have a few breakrooms and mostly outlets for electronics - not a refrigerator, microwave, and any number of appliances plugged it. And once you've spent millions on that - open them up for the low rent subsidized crowd and watch them turn into cesspits just like 10,000 other "Project" housing developments. An investor's wet dream? Only if they shit the bed.

In White Plains, Westchester county, they have been building new and converting office buildings into high end apartments for well over 2 years now. We're talking $3500 for a 1 bedroom to $6500 for a 3 bedroom. Monthly parking space rent $500. Small units though. The buildings have a bunch of amenities including rec rooms, gyms and pools. But they are rentals and none of them close to being full. In New Rochelle they did this before Covid and since no one moved in they closed local housing projects and moved them in to these new buildings. The rich then are moving out.

Queens NY has done the same but Welfare recipients get fully furnished units.

You'll own nothing and be happy and you will live and one big mashed up community.

Well, the city is doing this, so it doesnt have to be easy, or more to the point, cheap. They still have enough people to raise the taxes on, and when the taxpayers all run away they will just get the money from Albany.

They should just level the buildings. Manhattan was all forests and fields before the evil white man swindled it from the injuns. We should leave it the way we found it.
