My recertification comes due on 12/22/22. Do we still get 5 years on the renewal or only 3? If so can you renew early before the 3 year law kicks in. That would be prior to 9/3/22.

You can renew early in the same calendar year 2022. I just did mine a few weeks ago and it says I’m good for 5 years.

According to a couple lawmakers who voted againts the bills, unless Huchol's law is overturned, no one gets 5 years between recertifications. Those who recertified in 2021 and were informed renewal recertification was due in 2026, because of the new law are due in 2024. Those who recertified or were permitted in 2022 before the bill takes effect will be due in 2025.
My recertification wasn't due until January, but I did it a few days ago. The new recert date is 2027, but I'm expecting that to be shortened to 2025. Regardless of the new recert date, doing it early bought me a few years in relation to the new qualifications of training and live fire qualification.
I really didn't want to submit my recert early, but NYS has a habit of screwing people for following the rules. Had I waited until January, it's likely that I would have found out that since the training was unavailable or even yet to be developed, I could not meet the recertification standards and my permit may be suspended.
All the new horseshit will be challenged, but in the meantime, will have to be dealt with. I can see massive noncompliance with some of the new restrictions, such as the new "sensitive places", but the administrative garbage is too easy for them to beat you up with.

Recertified last week even though I was not due till the middle of Jan. Just check again an I'm good till 2027

Of course ... but ... soon after the new law kicks in, you will be due in 2025, unless the new legislation is overturned. It seems the NYSP is budgeted to send letters out in the beginning of the calender year to remind permit holders due that calender year.

There’s no harm in waiting until December though. You’re subject to the three year rule 9/1 unless it gets overturned. December will give more time for things to settle out. I’d want as much time as possible personally.
I know of some older people who have had paper permits since the 1960's and later, who never went to the PPO and got a new plastic photo license or ever certified even once. They own only a few pistols and never sell them or buy more.

My Westchester permit is up for another renewal in March 2023. I tried to get ahead of things by sending in early notarized renewal paperwork with the requisite payment via check.
The county clerk's office sent back my paperwork and check with a cover sheet that said no renewals more than 120 days before the permit expiration date.

I think Im up for renewal in 2023, as well.
This bullshit went into effect in 2018, correct? so do we ll renew at the same time in 2023??? Im confused

I’m sorry am I missing something? I don’t see what renewing early will do? All it will do is you’ll need to renew earlier on in the three year mix correct? There is nothing in the new law that says you have to do X, Y, Z prior to the new 3-year renewal correct? It’s been a while since I read the law so I might be missing something.

The concern is that it may be so convoluted by that time if you wait until your renewal date or the longer it is put off. The more of a chance you get pulled into the new ridiculousness or the system being down due to the madness is another concern.

I did my recert last month early also ( due next spring 2023 originally) so I am within 1 year.
I could recertify now with 2 mins of time and the click of a button knowing I will be good for anywhere from 3-5 years while doing nothing else.
Or,
I could try to maximize every day of this current license and push it out waiting till next spring to then push off my next recert date. Along the way while waiting to maximize my future recert date the state may change the rules of the game and say I need to go through new classes or training or pay more fees or some bullshit to recertify.
So I rationalized that it's far more of a risk to wait then it would be to have my future recert date be 9 months sooner. God willing I will be out of this state by that point anyway that my future recert is due so I will be gone and won't care but will be covered now.

I did when I went to add a new pistol to my permit.
I recertified online last month. I haven't received anything in the mail.

Did you mail it in or do it online? I think if you did it online you don’t get a paper copy mailed… At least that’s what I remember.

You should get a email. You can also go to check the web site to see if it went though. I just checked and I’m good until 9/2026 I think.

Actually, guys, I think I have even worse news. I was reading through the law the other day and ran across a portion that talked about recertification. If I recall correctly, it stated that anyone who already had a permit would need to recertify within 1 year of the day the law takes effect.
If I read and interpreted that correctly, that means that anyone who recertifies before 9/1/22 will need to recertify again by 9/1/23. I'll go dig through the text and see if I can find it again. brb

Note that the "will expire in less than one year" is preceded by an "or". My reading of this section says that anyone with a license that was issued 3 or more years prior to the day this law takes effect will have to recertify within one year.
My re-cert is due in December 2022, I was thinking of getting it done early to avoid having to attend 16 hours of classes that haven't even been defined yet (much less offered by any instructor) before the end of the year... but from what I think the law says, that's a no-go.

What I read is you’re right about the first part but recertification early for you would allow you a year just on the off chance they make you get the training and what not before.
