That had occurred to me, too...figuring it would be my go to, capability-wise, as I can actually change mags like you’re supposed to with it, it would make sense to have it be the lighter of the two. On the other hand, I’m not really using it for HD (though it would obviously work), plus, and I...
I don’t really have a target weight, per se, just lighter than my first build. Don’t get me wrong; it’s not like my other AR is unwieldy or unmanageable, I just want something a little different. Just from the barrel selection alone I’m saving nearly 20oz...yup, just on the barrel!
Look what I...
Following!
I started a fixed mag build, and am weighing my options for fixing the mag as we speak. I like the RED factor of that Cross Armory piece you posted. It seems like it’s a good way to shout to to any nosy folks that “YES, I’m abiding by the ‘laws!’”
Should you move out to a freer...
Several of you stated that I’d quickly begin another build after completing my first, and you were right!
My goals for this one are as follows:
Fixed mag ”range toy,” so I can enjoy the features.
Light! My first build, with its 18” SPR profile, 15” handguard, and Thorsen stock, is quite heavy...
I’ve found ammo there...it’s frustrating, but you literally have to check every few minutes on a day off. Stuff comes in every couple of days, but it’s out in a matter of minutes.
i gotta thank you for this tip! I am about to start my second AR build and learned from my mistake the first time around in waiting too long to source a lower. I did just what you said, and I have the exact lower I was looking for on it’s way to me. Thanks again!
If anyone is still tuned in, I got my upper back yesterday, complete with an appropriately immobilized thread cap. It took them one day, and the picked it up and dropped it off, with profuse apology. Would I rather it have been done right the first time? Of course. Can I really complain? Not...
I have a bone to pick with optics planet. I tried to buy an Aero assembled upper from them. Everything was fine, I checked out my cart, done. Two days later I received an email that they canceled my order because they deemed the upper to be somehow in violation of the laws here in NY.
I emailed...
I kept the ruger magwell on mine, but they are significantly more expensive than the Glock ones. I don’t have a pistol license, but if I did, I’d definitely seek to match it up with my sidearm.
I have heard that there can be feed/fit issues with Glock mags, but I can’t corroborate this, so...
This one is the model I own.
Fixed stock, 10rd mag, and unthreaded barrel. They have a pretty wide product line for different markets/regulations.

I have the MLOK handguard-equipped NY compliant model. It’s a great carbine, a bit heavier than it looks, but a load of fun to shoot.
Edit- I purchased it before COVID, though. I know they haven’t been able to keep up with demand, as of late.
Great firsthand information here. Thank you for taking the time to post this!
I’m considering a fixed mag for my next build, and this is valuable stuff.
Just called the shop, they’re taking it back today. Literally picking it up from me. Thanks for the advice. It doesn’t seem like I’d want something rattling around the crown.
Yup, it’s the Gen 2. Here it is mounted up!
also, quick question. Upon assembling the rifle and giving it a once over, I noticed that the cap that was pinned and welded by a local shop has a little bit of play to it. Is this typical, or should I head back to the shop?
You know, I didn’t. I intentionally went with Aero Precision/Ballistic Advantage upper/lower/BCG to hopefully minimize the issue of tolerance stacking. I actually shot BA a tech question asking about the head spacing of their assembled uppers. They ensured that the headspace is checked upon...
I finally put it all together! I got restless and did it without the help of my friend. The only thing I have left to do is mount the optic, which I’m going to do with my friend, because he has the necessary hardware.
Within 30 seconds, I almost lost an eye. The magazine catch spring...didnt...
Yeah. I’ve tried to hit the mark at each step in this build, so, needless to say, there’s some aviation/mil-spec grease showing up tomorrow, haha.
Btw, finally picked up my lower! Gonna get together tomorrow with my buddy who’s built a few already and put it together!
Think something like this would work? I have a fresh tube laying around in the garage. The upper is fully assembled, so this is only for the lower receiver/castle nut.
edit- how about adding the link? Derp. Valvoline™ Full Synthetic Grease : Product Catalog - Valvoline™
Picking up my lower shortly...haven’t been able to get out at a reasonable time yet!
quick question: I’ve been reading and watching vids on assembly. What, if any, do you like to use on the lower receiver/buffer tube threads? It seems like ppl are using grease of some kind...then others are...
That's good to hear, thanks! I received a shipping update, and it turns out it’s showing up tomorrow...a rare stroke of luck in the shit sandwich that is 2020. I’m a sucker for new, quality stuff, whether it’s bass/guitar gear, fishing stuff, etc...can’t wait to finally get it all together.
You know, I’ve been torn on this. I’ve wanted a rifle in .308 for awhile now, and I love the Henry rifles I already have, but do I want a more “traditional” bolt action arrangement for my first/only long range .308 platform?
Ok, have a lower on the way!
I found three places online that had Aero M4E1 lowers (identical to BA Enhanced lowers, with the exception of the logo). One didn’t ship to NY, the other had a real sketchy website. I ended up calling the third, a place called Carolina Sporting and Security. I...
I mean, I’d rather have my side loading Henry 30/30 than a handful of rocks. I fact, I think it’d be downright terrifying from the wrong end. But I’d still feel much more confident with a semi auto if I had the luxury of choosing.
Update: I’m frustrated!
Got some ammo, so I literally have everything I need, except, you know, a lower.
If you’ve been following, you know I’ve really been holding out for a BA enhanced lower. I like the features, and I like that it’ll match my BA upper. They haven’t been in stock. I...
Updates:
got my EWL, took apart the BCG, gave it a quick clean, inspection, and put it back together lubed up. I then installed it into the upper with the charging handle. Looking good!
Also got my optic. PSA was running a promo for the Strike Eagle 1-6x with a mount. I knew I wanted an LPVO...
I’ve actually seen that once or twice amidst the haze of information online--froglube+NiBo= bad. Thanks for corroborating that!
The EWL is a little pricey, at roughly $16 for a 4oz bottle via amazon. I’d spring for it, if it was worth it.
It’s good to know that I could just stick with CLP and...
What do you guys recommend for lubing a nickel-boron-coated BCG? There is some wacky, conflicting advice on the web, ranging from no lube (ouch!), to Slip 2k ewl, to synthetic motor oil, to automotive grease, to various combinations and concoctions. There seems to be no real consensus, with...
I’ve got a few things on the back burner that I hope will assuage my inevitable sadness...I still wanna get some MCarbo internals and a light for my PCC. Then I just gotta get better at shooting...
Ok, big week!
Got my BCG and emergency repair/spare parts kit from Aero, and had my barrel pinned and welded at South Shore Sportsman. they took it in on Saturday, and had it ready last night, picked it up this morning. Great turnaround, considering they've had a line out the door every time...
I’d like to put a light on my PC carbine. She’s all dressed up with that MLOK handguard with nowhere to go.
I see some options ranging into the hundreds of dollars, some in the couple dozen bucks, a whole lot in between.
It would be for basic home defense/fun duty mostly inside 25yds...
I know, I’ve had one in my cart at least once every couple days since I started this build! Their enhanced lowers are virtually identical, function and feature-wise, to the BA...I just like the branding on the BA stuff, and think it’d be cool for it to match my upper. Shallow, I know, but this...
Got my wrench and 2x10rd mags in today. They were supposed to show up yesterday—in fact, fedex marked them as “delivered”—but they went to the wrong house. A phone call to the distro center, and they showed up at my house today.
CDNN got this stuff to my house in a hurry! 40 bucks plus shipping...
