I have a BA enhanced upper that has an atlas handguard. I’m waiting for the BA enhanced lower to come in. I’m pretty sure all the BA stuff is the same as Aero, anyway.
I saw on one tutorial that blue loctite was an acceptable substitute for staking, but I’ve also seen loads of posts indicating otherwise.
Would something like this give enough whack to displace enough material to properly stake the castle nut...
Thank you for bringing up a question I knew was coming but didn’t ask yet.
I hear a lot about vice blocks for receivers, but I don’t always see them mentioned in tutorials. I have a built upper assembly minus BCG, but I will be assembling the lower when it comes in, and then putting the two...
Yeah, flying springs and pins are fun. The first time I took apart my Ruger (my first semi auto), I idiotically hit the trigger with the lower pulled off. Finding those pieces was a blast. Lesson learned, though...I’ll never make that mistake again.
Stock, recoil system, and barrel thread cap are in! I know I won’t need a crush washer, but I kinda placed the order before I found that answer, so I’ll either hold onto it for the inevitable fixed mag build or karma it up.
At this point, I’m just waiting for my lower of choice to come back in...
Great thread! I’m assembling parts for my first AR, and this has been helpful.
Question regarding the Swampfox scope. I haven’t heard of them, but I like what I’m seeing. Which model did you go with? I’d like a 1-6x LPVO, ans can’t decide if the more expensive Arrowhead is worth it for me.
Hey folks! I ordered up a Thordsen Gen III stock, carbine recoil system, and barrel thread cap today. They’re running a free shipping deal on orders +$60 this weekend.
Quick question: say someone were to go the red loctite route to secure something permanently to threads. Would that person also...
Yes, that is what the tech support folks at Ballistic Advantage recommended for the 223/556 barrel setups.
I have a trigger group and a lower parts kit on the way. Getting there!
This was really helpful, thanks for taking the time to put this together.
As someone who would like to start taking some carbine classes, I’d be curious to see what kinds of different things you‘d recommend on that end.
The folks at BA recommended the carbine system, but there was some disagreement here. Beyond some recreational shooting with a few friends’ rifles, I’m new to the AR platform entirely, so I defer to folks who are more familiar. I’ll prob go carbine recoil system since that’s what the BA people...
Yes, I asked them, speaking specifically to the gas tube length, and their reply was focused specifically on recommendations for all 223/556 barrels.
I’m getting such mixed responses on the web regarding rifle length gas systems and carbine buffers.
Basically, the safest answer seems to be pick...
Duly noted! I actually asked BA tech support this exact question, and they recommended a carbine buffer/assembly with their .223/5.56 barrels. I’ve heard mixed responses based on my research, which has consisted of googling these questions and reading other people’s responses.
Got my upper in!
18” BA Premium stainless, bead blasted in .223 Wylde. It has an SPR profile, which I didn’t even realize means that it’s shaped for a specific type of suppressor, which is obviously of no use to me. Oh well, as long as it still functions for me with a thread protector stuck on...
I have a Henry side loader, but in 30/30. It’s a pleasure to load through the gate. So much so, that I’ve all but forgotten about the tube loading option. I suspect that if I were hunting with the rifle, the option to unload safely via the tube would be nice. But I don’t, so it’s a moot point...
Got a nice upper on the way from BA. @ohms139 was kind enough to karma me a charging handle, for which I am tremendously thankful.
I’m going simple on a lower receiver. I see the Aero/BA stuff has set screws that allow you to adjust the fit between upper and lower to reduce shimmy. I hate...
Just popping in to express my thanks at you guys sparing me that judgement in my “featureless AR“ thread, haha.
I am already a proud NY firearms owner, but I do still have the occasional newb question, and I appreciate all of your patience with me.
So I found the exact built upper I was looking for on OpticsPlanet.com.
placed the order two nights ago, and I received an email today that my order was cancelled!
”We have carefully reviewed the details of your order and some or all of the products you ordered are subject to United States...
Yes, you’re right. I do appreciate the corrections, for the record. Nomenclature matters, especially when dealing with constitutional rights and efforts to infringe upon them.
The combination of barrel, gas system, and foregrip that I’m seeking seems to be so. I learned from my night spent feeding my baby and alternately wondering if I made the right choice that I should wait until what I’m really looking for pops up.
I love my PCC. It’s a blast to shoot. I’ve only shot mine indoors to 25yds, but at that range with stock irons, I’m just making one hole in the paper. Accurate enough for me. Plus, there are enough aftermarket parts (and more coming) to keep the tinkerer busy.
As soon as this plague blows over...
Update: cancelled my order with PSA. I really had my eye on something from Aero/BA, but got frustrated waiting. I realized that I likely wouldn’t have gotten over this, so I pulled the plug. It’s not like I can get out and shoot for the time being, anyway...might as well wait until I can get...
I meant to speak to that!
Gonna pull it off and have it capped locally. Was either gonna keep it for a future fixed mag build, or give it away for karma.
Ok, so I did some soul searching.
I wanted an 18” barrel. I did. But I realized that most of my shooting is indoors, with occasional trips to an outdoor range with 100-200yd lanes.
After hours of window shopping, I went with this built upper from PSA. I added their premium Nickle Boron BCG...
Ok, so I’ve done some more digging.
anyone with any experience with the ar15part.com uppers/barrels? I love their build your own upper feature, but I want to make sure their barrels are decent.
Once again thanks to all that have chimed in. I’m learning heapfuls by the moment.
what are your thoughts on this built upper? I’m aware I’d have to get the barrel pinned and welded, right? None of those options would be legal for a featureless build, correct?
i like the Wylde barrel/chamber...
Bit of a silly question.
I'd like an 18” barrel. Want a little longer than my PCC. Does this affect my choice of Thordsen stock? Would you go carbine length or rifle length?
While I can’t make the COVID special classes, I would like to attend in the future. Would a pistol caliber carbine be appropriate for a defensive carbine class?
I really appreciate all of the suggestions, folks. Definitely sets me up for some quality research and planning.
As far as lowers go. What sets one apart from the others? They vary wildly in price...is there a Goldilocks zone for price to quality? What are desirable qualities or features...
I understand your point, not discouraging in any way! I figure I can get the ball rolling, acquire the necessary non-FFL pieces, then jump on it as soon as this plague is over.
As far as budget, I’d like to keep it under 1k before optic, though closer to 600 would be nice, if there isn’t too...
Dang...there is a wealth of info, here. Thanks so much for taking the time to post this.
and yes, at less than three weeks old, she’s already growing and changing day to day! Can’t wait to teach her on her own Henry .22.
HI, folks. Quarantine has got me restless, and we just had our first child, so I wanna start a project.
I’d like to put together a featureless AR with a Thordsen stock. I’ve shot my friend’s, and didn’t mind the ergonomics, plus I want to retain the ability to change mags/reload without...
