I am not quite sure what the hubbub is even about. If you carry a cellphone other than something exotic like a Pinephone, you already know you are being tracked and spied on at all times regardless of the settings you think you might have set. Its just the difference of which private company is tracking you and what they are doing with that information. .

For a cell phone to function at all, your cell provider has to have all of that.

If you're not comfortable with that, don't have a cell phone.

It violated the 4th when they allowed police to access the information without a warrant.
They violated quite a few other laws when they kept and sold that information without giving the person involved the option to demand its deletion.

Every person injured (physically, emotionally, mentally) due to Flock's mishandling of that person's private information should sue Flock for 5x whatever their gross income was for that year, as well as demand the arrest and prosecution of every Flock employee involved in the mishandling of that info.

As well people injured by this should be demanding the firing of any official, whether police or political, who allowed this to happen, and suing them for all they are worth.

this doesn't go away until it becomes painful for the Powers That Be. (oh, to be a Flock employee when some politician drives somewhere to fornicate with someone other than his/her spouse)

Yeah, I'm not sure if they are or aren't, just pointing out that the capabilities are 100% there.

That being said, hypothetically if I was running a surveillance device, that's one of the things I would do. The more data points you can pair and link together the stronger your surveillance is. I'd be tracking MAC IDs of devices. Not foolproof since some devices randomize, but more data points is better. Also those built in car wifi hotspots that they all seem to have but almost nobody subscribes to generally do not rotate MAC ID. Even if they did rotate MAC IDs, for functionality purposes their SSID broadcast does not change = easy to track.

What makes you think that surveillance system is even online to be logged into remotely ?

The cheapest and easiest way to comply is to install a local only system that records to a hard drive in the office.

If the ATF gets a warrant they can show up on site to view it, but they can't just log in any time.

I use Zoneminder for my cameras. Local not cloud storage. Standard RTSP protocol so it's vendor agnostic in terms of camera selection. Go ahead, seize it Mr. ATF agent. It's password protected at the drive level via encryption so if you de-power it to take it good luck ever getting into it.
