Most people don't realize we killed more people mass firebombing Japanese cities than we did with the atomic bombs. Literally the entire strategy was to burn the city to the ground. Not even pussyfooting around like carpet bombing a tank factory dropping 500lb high explosive bombs with a target hit rate of 5%. Nope. Not that. We just skipped all that window dressing of selecting targets based on military value and went right to dropping incendiary bombs on a city made of wooden buildings.
