Probably around $500 at best for used retail if you want to sell it quicker.

Yup, i know, it sucks. I just bought one a couple months ago brand new for $969. I didn`t like it at all, and looked into getting rid of it for something else, and that was the highest offer i got for mine from several places, brand new, less than 50rds thru it with all the papers and the plastic S&W hard case with it.
If you can find a buyer for more, take it. Try listing it in here in the classifieds and see what people say, or if someone bites.

Has the external lock. Both wood grips and rubber. Round count is exactly 7. Has been a safe queen. Model 686-6

Retail store is always going to pay about 50% of list value then a good shop will trum it around for maybe 100 more or else no one would buy it. Case in point I am going to be purchasing a used HK USP 45 from my LGS. They want $700 for it. The "blue book" value ranges from $800-$1200 for a used one and this particular example is in excellent condition so value would ve closer to tge 1200 end. However at 1200 I'd rather just drop a couple hundred more in a new one.
If OP needs top dollar then selling it on Gunbroker or whichever is the only option.

Does it have a fluted or unfluted cylinder. That makes a difference to some buyers as well. I’d say in excellent condition with the box and docs you should be able to get $750 or maybe more for it on the secondary market. Selling it to a shop will most certainly get you much less.

Unfortunately I had to ( very reluctantly ) let it get away from me. I was sorely tempted though! My gun slush fund is currently depleted due to two lever gun purchases a couple of weeks ago.
I’m actually looking for a 3” barreled 686 + with the unfluted cylinder.
How about a 3" 586 that goes click more than bang?

I’d be asking them to give you a new one. It’s a revolver so it shouldn’t be that hard.
Indeed. I don't think I could sell such a gun in good conscience so it seems I am stuck with it. If S&W cannot fix it the only other think I can think of is sending it to TK custom to have it inspected and all internals replaced with superior parts. This is extremely expensive however.
They essentially have already done that. The last time they "replaced barrel cylinder and frame" different serial # on the frame of course and I can only construe that is internal code speak for "new gun". However S&W's new revolver quality is so incredibly poor I don't think simply replacing it would help. It seem getting a good new manufacture S&W revolver is now tge exception to the rule.
They'd have to give me a whole batch of 'em for me to hand pick the good one among them, if any, at this point.
