Either way a line is getting crossed.

I figure a line would have already been crossed by adversaries ... for a B61-13, space deployed weaponry, or similar devices (that arguable meet existing treaties if by a loophole and are primarily meant to be a deterrence) are deployed in conflict.

If it comes to it, it's easier and cheaper to just use one of the new light B61-13 gravity bunker busters with a 360 kiloton detonation of ground earth coupling after penetration (we have these in new inventory as a deterrent to China and any power thinking reinforced bunkers are a safe haven). We sped up production, completed production ahead of schedule and these have recently been placed in the ready to go inventory. Iran has no safe haven if the US uses these.

We refer to this as a bunker buster even though it is not conventional and it is only deployed at the order of the Commander in Chief.

The irony of nuking a nation that we are forbidding from having nukes is not lost on me.

How deep do you need to bury something to protect it from a 100 ton depleted uranium dart dropping in at Mach 25 ?

The original "rods from god" concept were 20' long 1' diameter tungsten rods. Each would weigh about 10 tons and hit the target at about 12,000 fps.

Basically really big really fast AP rounds.

Launch costs made it impractical as a weapon.

But that was before Starship.

They could absolutely be a practical weapon now, since you can put 10 of them in orbit with a single much cheaper launch.

But, you don't have to actually put them in orbit anymore either. You could just use the starship like a bomber. Launch it right when you want to use the weapon.

You could also make the rods much larger, make that thing 100 tons instead of 10, and it'll hit much faster too.

USA use of nuclear weapon in Iran would anger 4 nuclear, and somewhere around 6 wanna-be nuclear armed countries. (Do you really think Saudi Arabia, one of the wealthiest countries on Earth does not have nuclear weapons?) N. Korea will make book selling nuclear weapons.

I think President Trump and the Cabinet expect to lose the midterm. The conflict with Iran will continue for 2 1/2 years or however long it takes in that time frame to have Iran capitulate or Donald Trump is convicted by Senate. It will take at least a year to impeach and convict President Trump if the Democrats take the House in the mid-terms.

If President Trump is impeached (3rd time a charm), convicted and removed from office, JD Vance becomes President.

With Nixon, (Agnew, Rockefeller, Ford): Senate chose new VP.

Within next 2 years pipelines built to bypass Str. of Hormuz rendering Iran impotent. USA/Venezuela become the major oil producers/exporters.

Remember how pissed of everyone was about the fallout from Chernobyl?

A B61-13 would not have fallout like Chernobyl (or Fukushima, or Heroshima, or Nagasaki, or like most early weapon testing) since 1) it is primarily a nuclear fusion device (with one primary fission trigger) which generates less contamination, 2) there would be scaled depth of burial (it is a bunker buster placed deep enough to contain the explosive yield and pack the entry shaft) and 3) Pickaxe Mountain will have some geological screening. Although it would likely be a contained seismic event and sinkhole with loss of life limited to the blast circumfrance, the use of a thermonuclear device by the United States would not be employed cavalierly and would piss many off as you suggest.

On the other hand Iran may likely employ an above ground detonation over a population center with extraordinary loss of life. A primary reason that this Iranian conflict is taking place is Iran's self confessed apocalyptic ideology where hardline military / religious factions hold an eschatological view where nearly any conflict sould lead to catastrophic consequences because, in their view, it is acceptable to fulfill divine prophecy.
